Jeff's Review of:
Cruel Intentions
March 21, 1999

1999, 1 hr 35 min., Rated R for strong sexual dialogue and sexual situations involving teens, language and drug use. Dir: Roger Kumble. Cast: Ryan Phillipe, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Reese Witherspoon, Selma Blair.

What did you do on summer vacation? Anything is fairly boring compared to what the teens in Cruel Intentions inflicted: sex, lies, treachery, plotting, drugs, etc. In general, ruining or trying to ruin people's lives for sport.

The movie is well known as a remake of Dangerous Liaisons, and I've never seen the latter, so I have no idea how to relate the two, and I'm willing to bet that many of you have never seen it, either. So, on with items in the film that I can enlighten.

The actors and actresses seemed to have a real good time making this film, and I can imagine why. The sexy talk and acts, the fairly smart and witty dialogue and the attractive cast makes for quite the spectacle.

Sarah Michelle Gellar abandons all connections as Buffy the vampire slayer from her hit tv show, as the conniving half-sister of Ryan Phillipe. Both live in an upscale penthouse in Manhattan with parents away for the summer, and presumably gone from their lives altogether because these kids are seriously wicked. But in public the siblings present a wholesome image with evil, goofy, phony smiles that are quite amusing.

Gellar is great, but Reese Witherspoon is definitely near the top of my A list when it comes to attractive Hollywood actresses. She has a very wholesome quality in Cruel Intentions, and the way she wears her hair and her outfits had me paying attention.

For fun, instead of family trips to Six Flags or joining a swim team, Kathryn (Gellar) and Sebastian (Phillipe) have lots of sex with unsuspecting rich teens who are pulled in by their charms. But that's only so rewarding. So a bet is offered by Gellar that Phillipe will not be able to have sex with the new school Headmaster's daughter Annette, played by Witherspoon. Oh yeah, she also wrote an article in a magazine where she upholds the virtues of remaining a virgin until marriage. If Gellar wins, she gets to have his 1955 Jaguar, but if Phillipe wins, he can have sex with his half-sister any way he likes.

One thing I never understood was why Kathryn was trying to ruin Cecile (Selma Blair) for going on a date with the guy who dumped Kathryn? That was a really silly reason to devote so much time. Also, the character named Ronald, Cecile's music instructor and sort-of lover, is black, and for some reason we are subjected to a couple of awkward scenes where there's no reason to mention race relations.

The movie flowed well, and even with little to no action, the score and characters kept it intriguing, especially the scenes where Gellar and Phillipe interact. The ending was a little strange, and with ten minutes remaining I had my left eyebrow furled, wondering where the director was going. But the end turned out satisfying, and had me lifting both brows and nodding with a smirk.

The verdict: -- Sexy and smart. Did I mention sexy?.
