German-Austrian Folk Dance Association
1998 Tanz TreffenThe German-Austrian Folk Dance Association is gathering of folk dance groups primarily from the central and eastern United States who meet to share German and Austrian folk dances. We hold a biennial two-and-a-half day Tanz Treffen for this purpose. The 1998 Tanz Treffen in Baltimore (Jessup), MD, followed those held in Pittsburgh (1994) and Dayton (1996). The individuals and dance groups involved in the planning of the 1998 GAFDA Tanz Treffen are the following:

The third biennial GAFDA Tanz Treffen was held May 8, 9, and 10, 1998, at the old time Bavarian landmark "Max Blob's Park," located in Jessup, MD, between Washington, DC, and Baltimore, MD. Hosts for this Tanz Treffen were GTV Immergrün and Alpine Dancers. The weekend schedule was similar to the Pittsburgh (1994) and Dayton (1996) Tanz Treffen.
SCHEDULE
Friday, May 8th, 1998, 7 pm to midnight - Welcome Party. Food and beverages were available to purchase at the Friday night Welcome Party. Registration and folk dancing 7-8 pm. Dancing from 8 pm to midnight.
Saturday, May 9th, 1998 - Workshop, Dance, Ehrentänze . 8 - 9 am Registration/sign in, coffee, tea, sweet roll. 9 - noon am German/Austrian Dance Workshop, Break with Snack Table, Dance Workshop. 12 noon - 1 pm Lunch Buffet. 1:15 - 5 pm Dance Workshop, Break with Snack Table, Special Workshop (singing). 6:30-8 pm Buffet Dinner, Evening Dance Party. 8 - 8:30 pm Review of Workshop Dances -- Ehrentänze (Wearing of Tracht is encouraged). 8:30 - 12:30 Dancing
Sunday, May 10th, 1998. Sightseeing (ON YOUR OWN) Baltimore Harbor, Annapolis (Naval Academy), Washington, DC (Capitol, Mall Monuments, National Gallery, Air & Space Museum)
REGISTRATION
Registration for the 1998 Tanz Treffen was by mail, with a $10 pre-registration fee following by additional $30 registration by mail or on site. Information required for registration: Names, address, group affiliation (if applicable). Is your group interested in performing an Ehrentanz? (yes/no) If so, title of dance. Total amount enclosed. If a group application, list the additional names without addresses.Those who pre-registered for the Tanz Treffen received additional information by snail mail, including a map to the location of the Tanz Treffen and a list of local hotels.
Additional Information
- Dance Syllabus. Each participant received a package of dance descriptions (one per couple).
- Music. A cassette tape of music for all dances taught was available for each group attending. Those not associated with a group also received a music tape, as available, if they identified themselves on early registration.
The $10 pre-registration fee was for mailings and start-up costs. The total cost per person (not including housing) for the weekend was $40 (which included the $10 registration and $30 for meals and materials). Saturday lunch and dinner buffets (pre-paid with each full registration of $40) was provided by Blob's Park German kitchen.
