Private 1st Class Carlos Smith
Submitted By Brian Smith
Carlos Smith was in the 101st Airborne Division,he was a paratrooper. He used to say that "He must be crazy, jumping out of a perfectly good airplane".We don't know too much about his days in the 101st,but we do know somethings, though. He was in a platoon assigned with the task of clearing out towns that were occupied by Germans. He would drop in and get rid of the German troops. Also,as the platoon would move on to place to place, they would have to clear out machine gun nests and stuff like that. Now,when they did this, the guys in the platoon would take turns on who is going to go out, carrying a big, heavy machine gun,and draw their fire.He used to say that when it was your turn to go out, most likly you were going to be killed. When he whent out,he said that the bullets were so close to his head that he could feel the heat off of them, and he never understood why he didn't get killed(Personally,I think it was because of divine interverion). One time, his platoon came up on a barn, filled with German soldiers. They couldn't get them out so,they blew it up.We think that he was in Europe until 1949.Like I said,me and my family don't know too much about his experienses, just what he told my father and what my father has told me.He was a hell of a guy and I'm proud to be is grandson".
