Footprints, Jocelyn's Story

by Traute Klein, biogardener

FootprintsIn her final year of high school, Jocelyn Hutton lost first her leg and then her life to cancer, but she left a legacy of courage and healing.

One night I had a dream. I was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from my life. For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, one belonging to me and the other to the Lord.

When the last scene of my life flashed before me, I looked back at the footprints in the sand. I noticed that many times along the path of my life, only one set of footprints appeared in the sand. I also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times of my life. . . . and carried the weak one on his shoulderI questioned the Lord about it.

"Lord, you said that you would walk with me all the way, but I have noticed that during the most difficult times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why, when I needed you most, you would leave me."

The Lord replied, "My precious child, I love you and would never leave you during your times of trials and suffering. When you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."

The original Footprints parable is told in this article. In future Footprints articles, you will read other examples of people who experienced being carried through the roughest stretch of the road, e.g. The story of Faye who is too weak to walk unaided but sends out encouragement across the Internet and my own story in which I was snatched from falling into dark despair by a verse of Scripture.
