William Ratliff Heathan to Quakers, York Co., VA, 1767
This Indenture made the seventeenth day of
January in the year of our Lord ont thousand seven hun-
dred and sixty seven Between William Ratliff Heathan
of parish of Bruton and County of York of the one part and
William Harrison, Jr., Harrison Heathan, William Heathan & Fleming Bates, Sr.
James Bates, Benjamin Bates, quakers of York & James City
counties of the other part Witnesseth that the said
William Ratliff Heathan for divers good causes and con-
siderations but more especially for the love & affection I
have and do bear unto the aforesaid persons above named
hath given granted alien and confirm unto the afore=
said James Bates Benjamin Bates William Harrison, Jr.,
Harrison Heathan William Heathan & Fleming Bates Sr
So them and such of them as shall make profession and
walk orderly amongst the people called quakers and if the
above named persons and their heirs shall swerve from
the way they now make profession of them then this my gift
is so such of the people called quakers as will hold & enjoy
it for the use hereafter expressed forever That is one small
parcel of land to build a meeting house on situate lying
on the north side of the main road which leads from
Samuel ashley's ordinary to Capahosick ferry on York
river bounded as followeth Beginning at a double ash
running along a ditch nearly south thence down the
main road to the fork thence along the line of the land
belonging to the orphans of Isaac Bates decd to the
double oak first began at To have and to hold the
said granted prmises unto the abovesaid people called
quakers to be held by them for a place of meeting for
worship and for no other use whatever with all houses
edifices buildings and all and singularthe appurtenances
and appendances belonging or any wise appurtaining
In Witness whereof the said William Ratcliff Heathan
hath set his hand and affixed his seal the day & year first
above written
