AWARDS SEASON
Let the games begin! Sorry Sydney, but, we're talking about the fact that it's that time of year, and the film critics circles are weighing in as are the first of the Awards groups.
The International Press Academy announced their nominations this week for the Golden Satellite Awards. If anything, this group is a little brighter than the other two major awards groups, however, there is some crossover membership here with the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.

Today (Monday) the Golden Globe nominations were announced and Cate was not nominated, which was an outrage. Cate SURELY could have been nominated for her excellent work in "Pushing Tin"/"An Ideal Husband"/"The Talented Mr.Ripley" ...THREE award worthy performances.
Cate's potential category was:
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Cameron Diaz (Being John Malkovich)
Angelina Jolie (Girl, Interrupted)
Catherine Keener (Being John Malkovich)
Samantha Morton (Sweet and Lowdown)
Natalie Portman (Anywhere But Here)
Chloe Sevigny (Boys Don't Cry)
Okay, I like Cameron as well as anyone, but, dressing WAY down, having an out-of-control perm, and speaking softly is NOT acting.
What is it about the Golden Globes and Angelina. Lord knows I love her, but, she is nominated for EVERYTHING she does. Just like Sharon Stone, who today received a Best Actress nomination for "The Muse" (!!!), she can seemingly cough up a furball and get nominated for a GG. And, the early reviews for "Girl, Interrupted" have been deadly. She's sure to win. They LOVE her.
The wonderful Catherine Keener was excellent in BJM and deserves a nomination.
Samantha Morton is outstanding in everything, is headed for Cate's class, and I understand she is remarkable in Woody's newest film.
Natalie Portman is certainly very cute in ABH, and does a nice job, but, she is absolutely blown off the screen by Kimberly Brown who plays the similar daughter in "Tumbleweeds". Lucas had Natalie play such a mannequin in "The Phantom Menace" that this group must have been impressed by her signs of life in ABH.
Chloe Sevigny is very good in "Boys Don't Cry" so its hard to argue with this one, although it remains to be seen how much she was acting. She was basically playing the same abused white trash role she perfected for Harmony Korine in "Gummo". Oh well, what can you do?
Cate's films received the following Golden Globe nominations:
"AN IDEAL HUSBAND":
Best Actress (Comedy).......Julianna Moore
Best Actor (Comedy)...........Rupert Everett"THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY":
Best Picture (Drama)
Best Director......Anthony Minghella
Best Actor (Drama)...Matt Damon
Best Supporting Actor...Jude Law
