Actresses demand equal pay deal

BY NEIL MICHAEL AND BEN SUMMERSKILL

Top actresses including Cate Blanchett and Sheila Hancock have joined Government ministers in demanding better working conditions for women in film and TV.

A new survey has found that almost 90 per cent of women in the entertainment industry complained that their working hours were not laid down and half believed health and safety was ignored.

"There should be equal pay for equal work but in reality it doesn't exist," said Blanchett yesterday. "As a woman you feel greedy demanding better rights, no matter what accolades you have achieved, but we still have to."

Sheila Hancock added: "It's literally slave labour and it has to stop. No other industry would put up with these sorts of working conditions. "I have seen quite a few marriages break up at the end of a long film shoot because of the unsociable hours and demands."

Broadcasting minister Janet Anderson pledged to raise the issue with employers in the industry. Meanwhile, soaps have been criticised for their portrayal of ethnic minorities by the Broadcasting Standards Commission. Characters were not "rounded".
