Newspaper Row was the nickname for Park Row, a street in New York City. Whether or not it still exsists is beyond my knowledge, but it did exsist back in 1899, which is when "Newsies" took place.
Park Row recieved it's nickname because this was where the office buildings for the different newspapers were situated. Also present here were large blackboards above the streets. This is where each paper would put up their big headlines and a summary of the story(ies).
So why name a web site after a street?
Well, I've had this site for quite a while actually (although it's been rearanged several times by now), and this is what I've always called it. I wanted to name it something that "Newsies" fans could connect with.
Now, though, since I have decided that I don't simply want to make this a tribute page, the name seems to fit even more. I want this site to help continue the fight for rights that took place in the movie and in the actual event.
In a way, this is my chalkboard above the streets. People can come here to read what I have to say and act upon it (or not, if that is their choice). From here, I can help spread the word. I can help carry the banner.
As to the upraised fist logo, it's a symbol I saw used frequently back in the 60s (not that I was around back then, though). It has the general meaning of fighting for your rights, power to the people, that sort of thing.
