Safe In The Fold

"It's getting bored here," I thought glumly;
I saw many animals out there roam free.
Behind the fences I could only eat this patch,
"Oh look, John Rabbit and Peter Hare are playing catch!"
Once in a while I got out to other pastures,
But if I slept away, with his staff he'd capture.
My shepherd kept me within this fold,
Oh oh, one day I'd be really bold!
He was not noticing the hole that day,
I crept out while he slept, meaning to play.
Finally, I'm free, I'm free!
"I can roam to wherever my legs bring me!"
I was feeling so proud of myself when without a warn
Behind the trees I saw two evil eyes shone;
My heart jumped into my throat as he showed his face,
No way he's showing mercy in any case!
"Run! Run!" I was shaken to life by a scream,
There I saw the fold door opened wide for me to run in.
I scampered for my life with only one goal,
I could not rest until I was safely in the fold.
I heard the dogs barked and my shepherd yellowed,
Stunned as I was, I didn't see where the beast burrowed.
Now there's one thing for sure I know:
The only safe place where I am TRULY free is the fold.
