In December 1997, more than 700 children in Japan were rushed to the hospital when an episode of an animated series based on the Nintendo game Pocket Monsters caused them to have convulsions. A total of 208 children aged 3 and up, were detained in the hospital after the broadcast. According to experts, the fits were caused by a sequence in which red lights flashed from the eyes of the character Pikachu.
This incident in now in the Guinness World Records as the Most Fits Caused By A TV Show.
A fitness game released in March 1998, Pocket Pikachu by Nintendo, sold over 1.5 million units in the first 3 months! Pikachu is a yellow squirrel-like character based on the popular Japanese cartoon Pocket Monsters. The aim of the game is to keep Pikachu's cheeks rosy by taking it for regular walks. Pikachu is kept in its owner's pocket and "complains" when it is not being exercised enough.
This game is now in the Guinness World Records as the Best-selling Fitness Game.
