According to "The Illustrated Book of Signs & Symbols," a symbol is "something that through its nature or appearance reflects or represents another thing more profound than itself." The movie, "The Matrix" is filled with many complex symbols and most of them have a multitude of meanings, interpretations, and definitions. Here is my list:

morpheus

Rain/Water

  • In "The Matrix," water is symbolic of the unconsciouness, the dream state of the Matrix.

  • In movie, rain (or any falling object that mimics it) represents the code of the matrix, which is comprised of vertical columns of green symbols that appear to fall downwards. This theme of recreating the code in the matrix world is also taken a step further--most of the objects in the matrix are green or have a green tint to them as well.

  • According to the Wachowski brothers, "[Don Davis] digitized raindrops against window panes to create the sound of the matrix code."

  • It is raining when Neo awakens from his "bug nightmare." When he goes to the Adams Street Bridge, the rain is pouring off of the bridge and we see the rain streaming down the back window when Neo gets inside of the car. Furthermore, we see the rain running down the side of the Lafayette Hotel (almost like a waterfall) where Neo goes to see Morpheus.

  • In Mr. Rhineheart's office the window washers are cleaning the office windows. The soap and water bubbles slide down the glass and are wiped off in a downward motion.

  • The sprinklers in the building where Morpheus is being held go off and it appears that it is raining in the building. The water is seen running down the side of this building as well.

  • In the pod (which is similar to the womb), Neo is encased in water and has had no experiences of life outside of the matix. His removal from the matrix and the pod he is in is similar to a "birth" experience. According to Jung, birth is symbolic of a new phase in your personal development. Furthermore, the "A Dictionary of Dream Symbols" states that "birth can also represent the waking of the ego--that is, consciouness."

  • When Neo is flushed out out of matrix pod, he ends up in a lake of water. In dreams, drowning represents the overwhelming fear of unconscious forces. In my opinion, the lake is representive of Neo's fear and shock of being pulled out of the matrix. He later succumbs to unconscious forces and passes out (falls asleep) after violently pulling himself out of the contruct.

  • We see the sweat slide down the top of Morpheus's head and it looks like rain drops.

  • The bullet casings that fall down from the helicopter seem to look like rain drops as well as the falling bullets that Neo stop in mid-air.

  • In the lobby, the flying building debris as well as the hail of gunfire mimics falling rain. The same holds true for the pieces of wall that break away and fall as Trinity pulls Neo down the wall of the hotel.

  • There is a glass of water in Neo's apartment and of course, there is the glass of water that Neo drinks in order to swallow the red pill. Once again, water is a reminder that Neo is dreaming--he is living in the matrix.

  • When the helicopter hits the side of the building, the pieces of glass fall down like rain in a downward motion.

  • Neo's boss is named Mr. Rhineheart. Interestly, when I looked up the word "rhine" in the dictionary it turns out to be a river (water).

  • Trinity finds an exit on the corner of "Wells and Lake". A well contains water and a lake is made up of water.

  • Two other streets mentioned in the movies (Walbash and Balboa) have water connections too. In 1513, the Spanish explorer, Balboa, discovered the Pacific Ocean. The Walbash river flows through parts of Ohio and Indiana before joining the Ohio River.

  • When Neo stops the bullets in mid-air, they appear to moving through water.

  • The word "tank" which is the name of one of the characters in the movie, also refers to water. The American College Dictionary states that a tank can refer to "a large receptacle or structure for holding water or other liquid or gas" as well as "a natural or artifical pool, pond, or lake."

  • pic

    Heart

  • The heart represents the emotions and love as well as the spiritual center. When Neo dies in the matrix, it is Trinity's confession of love that brings him back to life.

  • The heart is also representive of life. When those in the matrix die, we see their hearts stop beating on the computer screens. When they lose blood, it means they are in danger of dying as well.

  • The hotel that Trinity is in at the begining of the movie is called The Heart O' The City Hotel. This is the same hotel where Neo dies and comes back to life at the end of the movie.

  • The name of Neo's boss is Mr. Rhineheart.

  • In the book, "Understanding The Dreams You Dream," it reveals that the kitchen is a symbol of the heart. It is a place representive of intent, desire, motive, ambition, and plans (it's where things are "cooked up.") It is the kitchen where the Oracle tells Neo what the future has in store for him and where she makes a comment concerning Trinity's feelings for Neo. Plus, we also see another kitchen when Neo is trying to get to the nearest phone exit, which happens to be in the Heart O' The City Hotel.

  • Clocks and watches also stand for the human heart and the emotions. Note that there is a clock in the hallway of the Oracles's apartment. It is also in the shape of a sun. (Check out my Names, Numbers, and Religious Ties Page for more sun/son references.)

    pic

    Light/Lightning/Being Of Light

  • Light is a symbol of the conscious and the real world. Note how gun on the Nebuchanezzar shoots out a stream of light that kills and that the sentinels in penetrate the Nebuchadnezzar with beams of light.

With this in mind, light or (flashes of it) represents the "awakening" of the mind to a conscious reality (the real world). This is why (through Neo's eyes) we see Trinity and Morpheus engulfed in a misty light as he sees them for the first time in the real world.

  • Light is also symbolic of truth, wisdom, and spiritual power. In the scene with the Oracle, the song playing in the background is titled, "I'm Beginning To See The Light."

  • In dreams, a being of light is symbolic of a divine energy. This is a very accurate statment for Neo when he dives into the agent and he explodes into a being of light.

  • Most of the light we see in the matrix appear as beams or shadows of light that seem to pierce through the darkness. Examples of this include: flashlights, truck headlights, club lights, etc. This is symbolic of truth piercing through a world of lies, good trying to overcome evil, and hope shining through despair (a "ray" of hope.)

  • Lightning, according to "A Dictionary of Dream Symbols" is representive of the "consciousness penetrating the unconsciousness." In the movie, this translates into the fact that aspects of the real world (like unplugged humans) are able to infitrate the matrix and affect it.

  • Lightning is also a symbol of "a flash of insight or inspiration."

  • Here are some examples of lightning or flashes of light:

  • There is lightning flashes (or bolts of electricity) in the area where Neo's pod is located.

  • Lightning is present during the storm that takes place while Neo is on his way to see Morpheus at the Lafayette Hotel, during his visit with him, and as the team is awakening Neo in his pod.

  • The window that Trinity spots on the rooftop is lit up.

  • We see a flash of light on Neo's face as he is being shot in the chest for the first time.

  • The first image we see as we are being pulled through the matrix code, is the light coming from a policeman's flashlight.

  • Lightning appears when Trinity shoots the agent in the head and he turns into a now-very-dead helicopter pilot.

  • We see lightning in the scenes when Morpheus shows Neo what happened to the earth and how it was nearly destroyed.

  • Blue waves of lightning appear around the Nebuchadnezzar as Morpheus turns on the electromagnetic pulse switch to stop the sentinels from killing Neo and Trinity.

  • We see a sudden flash of light as Neo moves past a man operating a copy machine in his office building.

  • Spark of light surround Neo and Trinity as she kisses him while he is "dead."

  • morpheus

    Eyes/Sunglasses

  • Eyes are a symbol of understanding. It is often said that eyes are the windows of the soul (therefore, the eyes reveal what lies in the heart.)

  • Open eyes are symbolic of consciousness, truth, perception, and knowledge. When Neo is freed from the matrix, his eyes are not just physically opened. Neo is then able, for the first time, to see the real world (perception) as well as come to understand what the matrix really is (knowledge).

  • In one of "The Matrix" trailers, a song titled "The Eyes Of Truth" by Engima plays in the background. A piece of this song also plays when the Matrix DVD is inserted.

  • In The Bible, Ephesians 1:18 states, "The eyes of your understanding being enlightened..."

  • Closed eyes are representive of sleep, unbelief, ignorance, and innocence. In Cypher's case, it is also symbolic of denial (a desire to not face the truth/reality.) Like he says, "ignorance is bliss" to him and that when he is reinserted into the matrix (goes back to sleep) he wants to remember "nothing."

  • Expanding on that last statement further, closed eyes (wearing sunglasses over your eyes) in "The Matrix" also represents sleeping/being in the matrix. Note that when the Neb Crew plugs into the matrix their "real" eyes are closed and in the matrix they are wearing sunglasses (covers over their eyes.)

  • Having Neo close and open his eyes at the agents (just after he caused one to explode) is very symbolic of seeing the truth (seeing the code) and awakening mentally, spiritually, and physically. It is an act of intimidation and power.

  • Note that those in the matrix who are good (Morpheus, Trinity, Neo, etc.) wear round, oval sunglasses while the evil ones (Cypher, the Agents) wear square, rectangular shaped sunglasses.

  • Mouse: "If you close your eyes, it almost feels like you're eating runny eggs." [Basically, Mouse is saying that in order to fool yourself or enter a state of denial, if you will, you have to close your eyes.]

  • Morpheus [to Neo]: "I can see it in your eyes. You have the look of a man who accept what he see because he is expecting to wake up."

  • Morpheus [to Neo]: "Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself."

  • Neo: "Why are my eyes sore?" Morpheus: "You've never used them before."

  • Morpheus [to Neo]: "[The Matrix] is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth."

  • Morpheus [to Neo]: "Were you listening to me, Neo, or were you looking at the woman in the red dress?"

  • Morpheus [to Neo]: "There are fields, endless field, where human beings are no longer born, we are grown. For the longest time I wouldn't believe it, and then I saw the fields with my own eyes."

  • Cypher [to Neo]: "I don't even see the code. All I see is blonde, brunette, red-head."

  • Neo [to the agents]: "...I'm going to show these people what you don't want them to see. A world without you."

  • Cypher [to Trinity]: "Look into his eyes, those big, pretty eyes and tell me yes or no."

  • Spoon Boy [to Neo]: Then you will see that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself."

  • In addition to the unconscious/conscious symbolism, wearing sunglasses in the matrix is also representive of knowledge, power, strength, and a desire for control.

  • Have you ever heard of the saying, "knowlege is power?" Once you know the truth about something, only then do you have the ability to try and change it.

  • In the interrogation scene, Agent Smith takes off his glasses when he attempts to convince Neo to help them. However, when Neo gives him the finger and refuses his deal, Agent Smith puts his glasses back on. Agent Smith also removes his glasses when he interrogates Morpheus and confides in him that he hates the matrix.

  • As Neo's confidence improves and he fights Agent Smith in the subway, he breaks Smith's glasses.

  • morpheus

    Smoke

  • The use of smoke (or lights which appear hazy) is symbolic of blurry boundary between reality and illusion.

  • Smoke reduces visibility and causes confusion or unawareness.

  • Smoke reminds us the matrix is a clever "smoke screen" (illusion) created to deceive the enslaved humans. Note that the meaing of the term "Smoke and mirrors" refers to "something that distorts or blurs facts, figures, etc.; artful deception."

  • Examples of smoke or smokey conditions include:

  • The Oracle smokes a cigarette while talking to Neo in her kitchen.

  • Cypher smokes a cigar while eating at the restaurant with Agent Smith.

  • The police release a smoke bomb in the basement of the LaFayette Hotel.

  • Right before Neo's bullet-time sequence we see a cloud of smoke or fog behind Neo. It appears that something is on fire or burning on the roof.

  • We see a cloud of smoke when the helipcoter hits the side of the building and explodes.

  • Smoke comes out of the gun ammo billboard.

  • When the agent attepts to run down Trinity with the truck, we see smoke coming from the tires and the exhaust. We continue to see the smoke/fog rise up while the agents are talking in front of truck.

  • Many of the lights used in the matrix scenes take on a foggy or hazy appearance. This is paticularly true of the flashlights used by the police.

  • morpheus

    Doors/Doorways

  • A door is an opening to a new phase in life.

  • A door also stands for a possible new opportunity or development in life as well as the invitation to enter an unexplored area of yourself.

  • In many cultures the doorway represents the passage between safety and danger or the transition from life to death.

  • In many respects, a door/doorway in "The Matrix" is also symbolic of choice and the need for making a decision.

  • It is while standing in his doorway that Neo decides to go with Choi and Du Jour.

  • Neo is also faced with a choice when he approaches the Oracle's door--wisely, he decides to enter.

  • When the elevator bomb explodes, the door of the elevator is blown off and appears to hurl at the movie screen in a wave of fire.

  • Morpheus [to Neo]: "[The agents] are the gatekeepers. They are guarding all the doors. They are holding all the keys, which means that sooner or later, someone is going to have to fight them."

Later on, near the end of the movie when Neo opens the door to 303, there is an agent waiting right on the other side the door. Immediately, the agent shoots Neo in the chest.

  • Morpheus [to Neo while in the sparring program]: "I'm trying to free you mind, Neo, but I can only show you the door. You have to walk through it." (He also makes the same comment at the Oracle's door as well.)

  • While in the car at the Adams Street Bridge, Neo opens the car door and contemplates getting out. Wisely, he makes the decision to stay inside the car.

  • border=0

    Mirrors/Reflections

  • In dreams, mirrors (or the reflection that you see in them) refer to truth, wisdom, as well as self-understanding.

  • Reflections in "The Matrix "serve as reminders that the matrix world is only one reality out of many. The Wachowski brohters explain it this way: "Reflections in general are a significant theme in the movie. The ideas of worlds within worlds..."

  • In The Amplified Bible, 1 Corinthians 12 reads: "For now we are looking in a mirror that gives only a dim (blurred) reflection [of reality as in a riddle or enigma], but then [when perfection comes] we shall see in reality AND face to face! Now I know in part (imperfectly); but then I shall know AND understand 'fully AND clearly, even in the same manner as I have been fully AND clearly known and understood [by God]."

  • Neo sees himself in a mirror as he is about to wake up in the matrix. The image is cracked and distorted because the image that he sees isn't really him--it's the mental projection of his digital self in the matrix world.

  • When he touches it, the mirror crawls up his arm and he can see himself in it.

  • Neo sees his face reflected in the machine that goes up to his pod to disconnect him.

  • We can see Neo being taken away from his office building by the agents in Trinity's motorcycle rear view mirror.

  • Many times we see other people and objects reflected in Morpheus's sunglasses. In fact, the Wachowski brothers have stated that the reflection of the pills in Morpheus's glasses "represents the two lives Neo is leading. In the left len we see the blue pill and Thomas Anderson, and in the right len, we see the red pill and Neo."

  • We see Neo's warped reflection in the spoon that he bends.

  • Neo's face is reflected in the car window when he gazes out. (This is when he is being taken to see the Oracle.)

  • city

    An Impersonal City

The notion that the matrix city (and those living in it) don't have a distinct identity/personality is carried throughout the movie. After all, it was created by the machines and is simply a computer simulation.
  • Everywhere in the movie the word "City" is used in place of the name of the actual city: City Waste, Heart O' The City Hotel, City Phone, etc.

  • Note the name of the agents--Brown, Jones, and Smith. These are the three most common last names in the United States.

  • Morpheus: "And you are?" Smith: "A Smith. Agent Smith." Morpheus: "You all look the same to me."

  • According to "The Secret Language Of Dreams," "A large, impersonal city may suggest that the dreamer has many acquaintances but few close friends and the dream may be offering coded advice about the need to establish more intimate relationships."

  • Taking this one step further, this may suggest that the city of the matrix is cold and impersonal because the people living in it are not relating to each other on a "real" level.
  • Trinity brings up the issue of Neo not connecting with others well in the matrix. Walking up to Neo, who is standing alone, away from others in crowded club, she tells him, "I know why you hardly sleep, why you live alone, and why night after night you sit at your computer."

  • This sense of isolation is also present in Neo's office where all the cubicles are small, isolated, and lack any sense of personality or individuality (just like matrix pods that the humans live in).

  • The use of two empty, abandoned hotels in the movie also yields to this concept of an "impersonal city." In "The Secret Language of Dreams," it says that "hotels represent impermance, a point of transition in a relationship or a shift or even a loss of personal identity. They may also suggest the price that has to be paid to sustain a relationship."

  • Interestingly enough, there are many sacrifices in the movie as characters die or risk their lives to save others.

  • Furthermore, all those that leave the matrix suffer a loss of personal identity as they try to determine who they are and find that "the matrix can not tell you who you are."

  • The use of very tall buildings in this "impersonal city" is also symbolic. They represent power and the machines supremacy over humans in the matrix. As Agent Smith told Morpheus, "Have you ever stood and stared at it, marveled at it beauty, its genius?"

  • neo

    Garbage/Run Down, Dirty City

  • Garbage, as well as the run down, abandoned buildings in the matrix, are a reminder of the fact that the real world has been nearly destroyed by war.

  • Garbage is also representative of the state of the humans in the matrix pods. They are simply discarded as trash (into a sewer) by the machines when they have fulfilled their purpose.

  • The references to garbage and decay also serve as forshadowing that the matrix world is one that needs much reforming or change.

  • We see trash around the apartment building Neo enters when he is running away from the agents.

  • While escaping that same building, Neo jumps into a pile of garbage.

  • Trinity is nearly run down by a City Garbage truck.

  • As Agent Smith points out, Neo helps his landlady take out her garbage.

  • In the subway scene, we see a lot of trash blowing around.

  • Cypher throws his cell phone into a garbage can.

  • The old TV repair shop seems to be closed or not longer open to the public.

  • The rooms in The Heart O' The City Hotel and Lafayette Hotel are vacant, dusty, dirty, and seedy looking.

  • The building where the Oracle is staying is run down and there is graffiti all over the walls. There is a homeless blind man in the hallway.

  • The subway is vacant except for one homeless man. There is trash blowing around, graffiti on the walls, and appears unkept. While fighing, Agent Smith and Neo get dust all over them.

  • The matrix world (with its garbage and the decay) is also symbolic of the machines who created it and control it; it is a representive of their evilness.

  • In the book, "Understanding The Dreams You Dream" by Ira Milligan, it states that sewage and garbage are symbolic of corruption, filthiness, sin, evil, corrupt authority and abuse of authority.

  • morpheus

    Fire/Explosion

  • Fire usually represents destruction (like the buring police car in which Cypher *escapes* from), but it can also be a symbol of purification.

  • An explosion is symbolic of a swift change or explosive growth.

  • Fire in dreams can be a sign of a new start or the potential for new possibilities as the old is destroyed. In this movie, it is a sign that the Neb crew is paving a new way and succeeding in their fight against the machines. As Trinity says, "no one has done anything like this before."

  • We see a great wave of fire when the bomb explodes in the lobby.

  • When the helicopter hits the wall of the glass building, it explodes into a fire ball.

  • The Oracle lights up a cigarette in her kitchen while talking to Neo.

  • morpheus

    Food/Eating/Cooking

  • In this movie, food was a reminder of the difference between the reality of the matrix and the real world. While the food in the matrix was better tasting or more plentiful, it is still isn't real.

  • Cooking for someone else is representive of a desire to influence them. (The Oracle wants Neo to listen to what she has to say and some may say that she manipulates his actions.)

  • The book "The Secret Language of Dreams" also states that "If the emphasis is upon the food itself [as is the case with the Oracle and her cookies], the underlying meaning may be the dreamer's desire to mould some truth or insight into a more palatable form."

  • The Oracle [to Neo]: "Oh, don't worry about it. Here, take a cookie. I promise, by the time you're done eating it, you'll feel right as rain." (Note that the word "cookie" happens to be a computer term as well. The cookie is also symbolic here of being nourishment for for the mind as well as the body so it could stand for communion, too.)

  • Cypher [to Agent Smith]: "You know, I know that this steak doesn't exit. I know that when I put it in my mouth, the matrix is telling my brain that it is juicy and delicious. After nine years, you know what I realize? Ignorance is bliss."

  • Mouse: "Do you know what it reminds me of? Tasty Wheat."

  • Dozer: "It's a single cell protein combined with synthetic aminos, vitamins, and minerals. Everything the body needs."

  • Neo [to Cypher]: "Thanks for the drink."

  • Cypher [to Trinity]: "I don't remember you ever bringing me dinner."

  • Neo: "There is no spoon."

  • The Oracle [to Neo]: "Oh, what is really going to bake your noodle later on is, would you still have broken it if I hadn't said anything?"

  • Neo: "I used to eat there. Really good noodles."

  • Mouse: "Maybe what I think Tasty Wheat tasted like actually tasted like oatmeal or Tuna Fish. Makes you wonder about a lot of things. You take chicken for example."

  • morpheus

    Phones

  • In "The Matrix," a phone is a symbol of helpful communication as well as a link to the real world.

  • In addition, they represented the bridge between life and death, the pathway between the real world and the matrix. Most importantly, a phone was a lifeline and the only means of escaping from the matrix.

  • The use of analog rotary phones also was intentional symbolism. According to the W brothers, it "linked the analog nature of older technology. We liked the suggestion of old original phone hackers, it sort of suggested in the big Rube Goldberg device that's in the mirror scene."

  • Morpheus: "I know, they cut the hard the line. There's no time, you're going to have to get to another exit... You have to focus, Trinity. There's a phone at Wells and Lake."

  • Morpheus [to Neo]: "When I tell you, go to the end of the row, to the office at the end of the hall."

  • Morpheus [to Neo]: "This line is tapped so I must be brief. They got to you first, but they've estimated how important you are..... Now, do you still want to meet?"

  • Neo [to Agent Smith]: "I know my rights. I want my phone call."

  • Morpheus [to Tank]: "Need an exit."

  • Neo [to tank]: "Mr. Wizard, get me the hell out of here!

  • Cypher throwing the phone away in the garbage can is symbolic of his desire to stay trapped in the matrix (have no connection to the real world) and keep the others there as well.

  • morpheus

    Televisions

  • In "The Matrix," televisions were used as a symbolic forshadowing of shocking news and revelations.

  • After Neo is taken by the agents, we observe Neo through a grid of small television screens. Slowly, we are pulled through one until we are in the room with him. It is here that we learn who Morpheus is and what the agents want with Neo. It is also during this scene that Neo is shocked to learn that life is not what it seems as his mouth is molded shut and a bug is inserted into his belly button.

  • We see a television in the Oracle's living room. The set is on and it appears the children are watching a movie that involves huge rabbits. Several of the children are also performing some amazing feats which intrigue Neo. It is at this point that Neo learns a quick lesson in boundaries of reality.

But most importantly, it is at the Oracle's that Neo is also presented with some very discouraging news concerning the future (that either Morpheus or him is going to die). it is also here that Neo is lead to belive that he isn't the one.

  • While Neo is trying to outrun the agents and make it to room 303, he runs through an apartment of two elderly woman. In the living room, there is a tv on and the one woman appears to be watching it while knitting. (The screen is shown only briefly but it looks like a man dressed like an agent is on the screen.) In the kitchen of that same apartment, an elderly woman turns into an agent and nearly misses hiting Neo with a kitchen knife.

  • It is in an old tv repair shop that Trinity, Apoc, Switch and Neo realize that awful truth that Cypher has betrayed them and that they are going to die (or so they think.)

  • In the contruct, Neo is showed via a television what the matrix is and what has happened to the earth.

  • morpheus

    Matrix Pods

  • In the movie, the matrix pods containing the humans were symbolic of a woman's womb. When Neo was flushed out of his pod, it was as if he was being born.

  • Etymologically speaking, the word "matrix" refers to a "female animal kept for breeding." It comes from the latin word "mater"--mother.

  • Interestingly, the Wachowski brothers had this to say about the meaning of the word "Matrix": "Like the movie itself, there is a lot of word play, a lot of hidden other meanings, a lot of multiple meanings. Besides that, we also like the definition, the mathematic definition of the use of matrix, or the use of it in terms of the woman's womb."

  • The matrix pods were also compared to a prison cell. This is a very accurate analogy since a prison refers to "any place of confinement or involuntary restraint."

  • In addition, the pods are also compared to an institution of bondage or slavery, where the slaves are unknowingly "bound by or subjected to some external power or control." In this case, it is the machines who are in control.

  • Morpheus: "Like everyone else you were born into bondage, born into a prison that you can not smell or taste or touch. A prison for your mind."

  • Morpheus: "What is the matrix? Control. The matrix is a computer generated dream world built to keep us under control in order to change a human being into this [a source of electrical power]."

  • When Neo is running from the agents and ends up in the apartment with two elderly people in it, we a television in the living room. For a split second, we see a man on the screen. It is a clip from an episode called "The Prisoner."

  • Life inside the matrix is also refered to as a prison.

  • Agent Smith: "I hate this place, this zoo, this prison, this reality, whatever you want to call it."

  • The small, identical, and isolated cubicles of Neo's office building were a foreshadowing as well as a symbol of the matrix pods (small prison cells) in which Neo and his fellow co-workers were actually living in at the time.

  • morpheus

    Taxes

  • Several times the word "taxes" were mentioned in "The Matrix." Overall, a tax is a payment of money or performance of services for the government to use. This is yet another reminder that those in the matrix are paying the ultimate tax to their government--the matrix. They are paying with their very lives.

  • The references to taxes were also subtle reminders to that fact that those trapped in the matrix are enslaved, "paying" more than they realize.

  • Paying taxes symbolizes life in the matrix and not knowing the truth.

  • Agent Smith: "In one life, you are Thomas A. Anderson [...] you pay your taxes..."

  • Morpheus: "You can feel it when you [...] pay your taxes..."

  • Neo: "*The* Trinity? That cracked the IRS d-base?"
