Evolution of Canadian Sapper Badges
The honour of by being granted the title, Royal Canadian Engineers led to a modified RE badge being adoped by Canadian Sappers. Perhaps to appease franco-tendencies, that was dropped with Hellierian unification. Badges below show the evolution of Canadian Sapper badges since about WWI (Edward VIII ended up being King before his father, but anything appears to be possible in the post Hellierian CF.) There were earlier badges that are not shown here . The 1974 CME badge adopted the South African 'Genie' 1975.

pre 1904 Royal Arms with a scroll below inscribed either Ubique; Canada; Charlottetown; Montreal; Brighton and combinations of the various Engineer mottos above or below. See Mazeas' Canadian Militia Badges Pre 1914. Rarest is the Brighton Engineers - made of brass. Toronto badge is unknown.

In 1902 CE with buckle and without for Militia . In 1904 RCE badge ED.VII (regular force), 1910 RCE GR.V , 1936 ED.VIII, (few if any issued), 1937 RCE GR.VI, 1953 RCE EIIR, 1970 EIIR, (better pattern), 1974 CME (unilingual), 1975 CME (bilingual). RCE ED.VII made also with laurel leaves but only know of one. ! CEU made for U.N. detachment 1975. Some wearing of a Grenade was also done at times.The earlier badges come in several variations and the colours vary according to the material used to produce them.. Bruce
