Brenda went to Luke's club to talk to Sonny and asked him what he knew about Miranda. Sonny told her what he knew about the explosion and Miranda's supposed death. He also told her that Miranda had asked him about her. When Brenda asked Sonny what he told her, he said he told Miranda the truth, that Brenda was too good for Jax. After talking with Sonny, Brenda decided to read the letters that Jax had wrote to Miranda. She lied to Mac about Robin asking her to get something from her room and gained access to the Scorpio home where Miranda was staying. Brenda was heartbroken to read Jax's declarations of undying love to his first wife. Miranda caught Brenda in her room and blasted Brenda for reading her private letters. Later, Brenda talked to Justus and tried to find out if her marriage to Jax was legal. Justus told her it depended on if Miranda had been declared legally dead and if Jax married Brenda in good faith. Brenda went back to Sonny and told him she wanted him to find out if Miranda had been declared legally dead so she would know if her marriage to Jax was valid or not. At the same time, Jax was meeting with Miranda at the Grill to discuss what had happened and where they should go from there. Back at the pool room, Sonny had Jason make some phone calls to find out the information Brenda wanted. Brenda asked Sonny why Jason was acting like he hated her now and Sonny replied that Jason didnt have to like her. Brenda told him that yes he did because Jason was important to her. She then asked Sonny if he had told Jason about the wire incident. Sonny wouldnt answer her but she saw it in his face and asked Sonny why he couldnt just let that go. Sonny didnt say anything.
Brenda showed up at the Grill and saw Jax and Miranda reminiscing about their past. Soon after Miranda told Jax that tonight proved they didnt have anything left between them and left the Grill. Brenda went home a little later but Jax wasnt there and she knew he had gone after Miranda. Jax met up with Miranda at a beach and tried to talk to her about what had happened but Miranda wouldnt listen. She walked off again leaving Jax alone.
Brenda tried to call Lois but got her answering machine and decided to talk to it. She told Lois her fears about losing Jax and how she had read the love letters, and admitted that she had thought she was the first woman Jax had loved. When Jax finally made it home she told him she hadnt known if he was going to come home at all and Jax told her he didnt want to discuss it right now. Brenda got upset and told him, fine, when he was ready to fit in wife #2, be sure and let her know and she'd put it in her date planner. After a moment of silence, Brenda apologized and said she had wanted to handle this maturely. Jax told her she could say anything she wanted to so Brenda asked him when Miranda was leaving and he replied that the subject had never come up. Brenda told him that she knew she sounded jealous but that was because she was. She told Jax she loved him but she felt like her whole future was caught up in a past she could never share.
Later, Brenda and Jax were discussing Laura's death when Brenda began wondering what if that had happened to them. She then told Jax that she couldnt do this anymore, that she couldnt live not knowing where she stood with Jax and told him he had to make a decision about what he wanted. Jax asked Brenda why she couldnt understand how devastated he had been by Miranda's death but she could understand how Luke felt. He then told her how Miranda coming back had completely thrown him. Brenda said she was sorry, that Jax was right and she couldnt push him on this. Brenda said that Jax had been patient with her and she would just have to return the favor and that she would wait for him this time.
Not long after, Mac showed up at the penthouse and demanded to know what Jax had done to Miranda this time. Mac told them that Miranda had left PC and he blamed them both for her leaving. He then asked Brenda how long it would be before she left and nobody knew where or why. After Mac left, Brenda and Jax discussed Miranda's leaving. Brenda said she had thought that Miranda's leaving would make her happy but it didnt. She then told Jax he had to go after Miranda and close his past once and for all. Then he could come back to her and they could start their life together again.
Brenda went to Ned and asked if she could go to Laura's funeral with him. She told him that Jax had gone to Australia on business then admitted that she had sent Jax after Miranda. When Ned asked her how she was holding up, Brenda told him she was fine but would be glad when this whole mess was behind them.
After the funeral, Brenda asked Mike where Sonny was but he didnt know. Brenda commented on how strange it was that Sonny wouldnt attend the funeral of his best friend's wife. As she was leaving, Brenda got a bad feeling that Sonny was in trouble. She had a flashback to when Sonny was shot when they first knew each other and she knew Sonny needed her. At the same time, Sonny got a call saying that Brenda was in the ER and had asked for him. He raced to GH and demanded to know where Brenda was. At first none of the nurses knew what he was talking about then one nurse came up and told him she knew where Brenda was. Then she led him into an empty trauma room. Before Sonny could leave the room someone grabbed him from behind and stuck a needle in his neck. Then an unconscious Sonny was wheeled out and taken to his penthouse and left there, with drugs and stuff all around him. Meanwhile, Brenda went to Luke's club looking for Sonny. When she learned he wasnt there she went to the penthouse next.
At the penthouse, Brenda found an unconscious Sonny with all the drugs around. She tried to get him to wake up but wasnt fully successful. Brenda called for help and found out the drugs could be heroin and hid them under a couch cushion. She tried to keep Sonny awake and talking, and told him he couldnt die on her. When the ambulance arrived, Brenda refused to leave him and rode to the hospital with him. In the hallway, Brenda told Sonny she wasnt going anywhere and Sonny whispered to Brenda that he loved her. Brenda took up watch outside Sonny's trauma room.
Meanwhile, in Australia, Jax caught up with Miranda on the beach where they had gotten married. Miranda tried to run away but Jax wouldnt let her. They argued and Miranda finally admitted that she still loved Jax but said it didnt matter because they couldnt be together. Jax reminded her that they were still legally married but Miranda told him that he belonged to Brenda now.
Back at GH, Sonny awoke to find a tearful Brenda keeping vigil at his bedside. As he stroked her hair and thanked her for saving his life, the two realized that their connection to each other was still very strong. Brenda vowed to help and support Sonny and then proved it by convincing the police that Sonny had been set up. Later, Sonny and Brenda both admitted that in times of trouble they were always there for each other. When Jax came back from Australia he recognized the new closeness between Brenda and Sonny, and was uneasy about it but didnt say anything. Jax told Brenda that he had brought Miranda back with him and that she had agreed to a legal divorce so that Brenda and Jax could be legally married. Meanwhile, Mike encouraged Sonny to fight for Brenda since it was obvious that they were still in love with each other.
Sonny started looking into who had set him up and found the nurse who led him into the ER room. She worked at Mercy Hosp but before she could tell Sonny her story, she was murdered. Back at the penthouse, Jax promised Brenda that he would divorce Miranda as quickly as possible, and they made passionate love. Later they attended the GH xmas party together but each of them continued to lock eyes with their respective exes. The next morning, Sonny barged into the penthouse and blamed his setup on the Jacks family. Both Brenda and Jax said that was ridiculous. Later Sonny contacted Brenda and advised her to stay out of the situation. Instead, Brenda went to Mercy Hospital looking for information on her 'sister' - Nurse Marilyn Cooper. Afterwards Brenda told Sonny what she had learned. Even though Brenda had found out some important things, Sonny warned her off the case. On New Year's Eve, Brenda kissed Jax but couldnt stop thinking about Sonny.
