Elijah Stanciel, Eleticia’s
mother’s boyfriend beat her and she died from injuries to her liver and
intestines from being hit in the stomach. Her mother was also charged and
both received 60 year sentences. Their life's were spared because they
are both legally blind. However the mother, Violetta Burgos’ conviction
was overturned by an appellate court because prosecutors failed to prove
she aided or encouraged the fatal beating. Even though the state had barred
her from seeing Stanciel after he was charged with breaking Eleticia’s
leg in an earlier incident.
