Michael was held upside
and repeatedly beaten in the abdomen, thrown against a wall and finally
squeezed so hard he vomited and passed out at the hands of Keith E. Bennett,
19, his mother's boyfriend. Michael was left untreated for two days
before he died. After he died Bennett waited another two hours to call
police so he could go buy some marijuana and smoke it.
When paramedics arrived
it was obvious to them that Michael was an abused child by the bruises
on his body and he was so dirty.
Bennett has been sentenced
to life in prison without parole and Michael's mother Kathy J. Cecil has
pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and is facing 25 to 50 years in prison
for allowing Bennett to sexually abuse and beat Michael because she was
afraid of loosing him. She also admitted to beating Michael herself because
she thought he was coming between her and Bennett.
Bennett also confessed to
the beating death of Bryan Whewell, 3 months old. He was living with Bryan's
mother at the time of the baby's death, however no charges were filed at
the time.
Michael's death led to the
firing of two workers for the Department of Children and Family Services
after it was disclosed that they had investigated two earlier reports that
Michael was abused.
