Zaria was shaken by her
mother's boyfriend, Orlando Watford, 24. He spent 18 months in jail awaiting
trial for her murder, however charges were dropped after a key witness
in the case could not be found.
Three years later, Watford
and Zaria's mother, Carrie Hagens, brought brain-dead Demetrick to the
hospital. Watford admitted that he had punched Demetrick in the head several
times and had thrown him into a table because he was crying. Watford has
been charged with first-degree murder.
It was also discovered that
another child of Hagen's, 18-month-old Mariah Hagens was suffering from
a fractured skull administered at the same time that Demetrick had been
beaten. A month prior to Demetrick's death, Mariah had been treated for
a broken leg.
Hagens has also been charged
with three counts of felonious child endangerment.
At the time of the beatings,
Watford was awaiting trial on a charge of first-degree assault for allegedly
stabbing a man. He has also been convicted of robbery, drug possession
and tampering with an auto.
