Mikki died from brain injuries
which resembled "shaken baby
syndrome." Lesa Orthmann,
Mikki's mother, was under a child protection agency's watch and had completed
a parenting class three weeks before Mikki died. Child welfare workers
saw no signs of physical abuse during 30 visits to the home nor did any
of the staff discover any evidence to indicate Mikki and her brother had
been subjected to physical abuse. Both parents were home at the time she
was injured, however as of a year after Mikki's death, no one has been
charged with her death.
