~Networking the net~
How does your homepage measure up? Have you looked at it critically against that of your competitor, or a similar business ?
- Check it out - do a search using the same criteria you feel you are listed under, does your page appear ? Some search engines use the first few words on the page so make yours count.
- Perhaps the listing only appears with the URL - which needs to show a simple, clear and concise statement.
Example - http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/vic/mpd/mpdrbp.htm
Could have read "VicRoads - Ringwood Bypass Stage 1"
- Will it be found easily in bookmarks ?
Example - Homepage1
Could have read "Welcome to Matt's Most Wonderous Web Machine !"
- If listed with a multi-listing group - often only their heading, and your account reference, will appear. This can often make it difficult to list, or locate, with various search engines.
- Is it dated, to show visitors it is active ?
- Have you printed it out, to be aware how it fits on a standard page ?
- Does it indicate the URL on the document itself, enabling the entire URL to be visible when printed or viewed ?
- Are you able to view it on different browsers - colour-wise, frames, etc. ?
- Does it have a web-workable contact person/point for reference ? Try it out on yourself - and see if you, as a client, would be happy with the response.
Try the change of address example for 'Composing Good HTML' as in the link below.
- Is the material covered by any copyright, yet not mentioned ? Your own copyright material may appear to be 'lost' if shown as copyright against the service provider or webpage designer back to themselves.
- Try viewing it with images "off" to see if links are recognisable for what they are.
All the above comments are covered fully in "Composing Good HTML" by Eric Tilton and partners - also authors of "Web Weaving - Designing and Managing an Effective Web Site."
