be ship's plans to tempt ship modelers?

and see the sites of the battles first hand. It is awe inspiring to realise the sacrifices made over

those long months in this remote and beautiful part of the world. I dove the CL51 twice in due

reverence and fully concious of the personal sacrifices and losses of those on board her and of

those that remained. I can only say a humble thanks to all those that have struggled to preserve

our freedoms.

He was not injured, but he was part of a group who were told to abandon ship, and so he spent the night in the water holding on to a life raft. He was picked up by Marines the next day and taken on to Guadalcanal, where he promptly came down with malaria. He went on to serve 20 years in the Navy, but the sinking of the Atlanta was certainly the most dramatic event he saw.Thank you for this site, which recognizes the sacrifices made by these men so that we may enjoy our freedom and our many blessings. There have been pretty good times since then. My generation has been blessed with a choice of whether to serve in the military or not. This time will bookmark. My Uncle William Flint was on the USS Juneau. His mother is still alive at 102 years old. Also one sister, my mother. I have searched the New York times newspaper for original articles. They begin in January of 43. The last one is in 1950 concerning the Sullivan Brothers mother. These articles are on microfilm in most major public libraries or univerity libraries. The newspaper is indexed so it is easy to find the articles. Comments: I am curious why you don't tell the rest of the story about the Juneau. Why not give a time line showing how long it took the US Navy to rescue the survivors of the Juneau? I notice on the USS Indianapolis, the full story is given. Everyone seems to think every member of the crew died during the sinking. No mention is given to the estimated 180 men left in the water by CPT Hoover, CO of the USS Helena. It is ironic that six months later, the USS Helena went down, in action, at night. The Navy rescued most of these survivors. I feel the Juneau deserves better. Thank you.

She probally had the best radar at the time, But the San Fransico was a New Orleans Class heavy Cruiser. This would have been a better Flag Ship in my opinion. I'm only 23 and the only relative I have that was in the navy, is my great uncle. He was on the Battleship Maryland from 34-38 I believe. I have spoken with former crew members of San Diego, Oakland, Flint, Tucson and Reno. All have been very helpful and forthcoming with stories, information and photographs. Due to the rather short (and tragic) careers of Atlanta and Juneau, I have been less sucessful in obtaining photographic information on them. Please, if anybody has any photos of these two ships they'd be willing to lend out or copy, let me know. I have until the end of September to submit a final manuscript and would love to include some additional coverage of these two ships.... Thanks again

My family never got to know any details of his time with the US Navy because of wartime censorship. Prior to his secondment about 1942??? he commanded in Australian small ships called corvettes. During the 1930's he commanded trading ships in the South Pacific and gained immense knowledge of the uncharted areas which no doubt led to him being on the bridge that fateful night.

My uncle survived and died before rescue (William Flint listed on your page) he is still survived by his mother (105 years old) and a sister. For more info on the fate of this crew I suggest you read "Left to Die: The tragedy of the USS Juneau" or see the video of the same name availible thru the conneticut public broadcast stations. There are many stories my mother told me about this event. She and her mother had already bought Christmas presents but they were returned with no notice of reason. The US goverment wanted to keep th goverment mess up of not rescueing the surviviors a secret. But a sailor on leave to get maried told a reporter on the Boston Globe the whole story. The goverment put the sailor in isolation. But on insissistance from the families allowed him to speak to the families. It's knoown that my uncle was in one of the rafts, but in the morning was gone. It is suspected that he died that nite and was put overside. My gggrandmother still gets a VA life insurance pention for this tragedy.
