King of Kings
"Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find;
knock, and the door will be opened to you."  Matthew 7:7

"Almighty and eternal God, may your grace enkindle in all of us a love for the many unfortunate people whom poverty and misery reduce to a condition of life unworthy of human beings. Arouse in the hearts of those who call you their Father a deep hunger and thirst for justice and peace and for charity in deeds and in truth. Grant, O Lord, peace in our days, peace to souls, peace to families, peace to our country and peace among all nations. Amen."

Father Basil Pennington, Pocket Book of Prayers

Dear Friend and Veteran:

Many people turn to the Lord only when they are in a crisis. Of course, praying in a an emergency is better than not praying at all. Whether things are going for us or against us, that should make no difference. Prayer should be a natural part of our lives and that we engage in it no matter what the circumstances are. Although the Father welcomes your petition in a crisis, He also takes great delight in your thankful prayers when all is going well. Whatever your circumstances are, whether it be a good day or a bad day, make prayer a vital part of your life.

Why pray?

  1. Because there is a devil, and prayer is a God-appointed way to resist Him (Eph. 6:12-13,18).

  2. Because prayer is God's way for us to obtain what we need from Him (lk. 11:3-13; Jas. 4:2).

  3. Because prayer is the means God has appointed for us to find "grace to help in time of need" (Heb. 4:16).

  4. Because prayer with thanksgiving in God's way for us to obtain freedom from anxiety and to receive "the peace of God" (Phil. 4:6-7).

When we seek God's face in prayer, we strengthen our relationship with Him. That's the most important reason to pray.

Prayers will help us to be always in the presence of God and to remain close in spirit to those we love. Such is the purpose of this devotion page. May it gives us peace, security and joy in our pilgrimage through life here on earth and in our journeys from home and back to our dear ones.

If you want to know how to pray in the "hard times", pray in the "easy times."

A Prayer of Those in Authority

O God, you have given me the great responsibility of being in authority over my fellowmen.

Help me always to act fairly and justly; but to justice help me always to add mercy and sympathy. Help me to know when to enforce discipline and when to relax it. Help me never to be guilty and prejudice against any man or favoritism for any man.

Help me to remember that people are always more important than things, and that men are always more important than machines.

Keep me from exercising my authority in harshness or tyranny, and help me also from being afraid to exercise it at all, and help me by my presence and my example to make myself and those who work under me one united band of brothers.

Help me to remember that, though I am called master, I too have a master, Jesus Christ, my Lord, Amen.

A Soldier's Prayer

Heart of Jesus, my Leader and my King, while I am doing my military service, make me loyal to my country and to my flag.

May I always do my duty as I see it and never take the easy way out.

May no sin injure my loyalty to you and my country and the ideals for which it stands.

Heart of Jesus, I trust in you. Amen.

Prayer for my Parents

O God whom we obey in honoring our parents, look down mercifully, I beseech you, on those to whom in your Providence I owe my being. May they grow daily in faith, in hope and in charity.

Implant deeply in their hearts the convictions that all things and all men must, in the end, return to you. Condone their frailties, and impute not to them my sloth and waywardness. Grant them health and properity; pour upon them the abundance of your grace, Defend and preserve them by your all-powerful hand.

May my personel christian living, by meeting their fondest hopes and expectations, be the consolation of their last years.

May they die the death of the just. May they pass quickly to their heavenly home. And may we, their children, join them there, for all eternity. Amen.

A Father's Prayer

O God, help me to be true to the great privilege and great responsibility which you have given to me. Help me to be an example and a friend to my children, and a real partner to my wife.

Don't let me get so busy with work and with outside things that a am almost a stranger in my own home, and that I take no interest in household things. Don't let me take for granted all that is done for me, and help me to keep love alive within the home.

Keep me from habits which make the work of the house harder, and from ways which irritate and annoy, or which get on the nerves of those who live with me.

Give me health and strength and work to do, to earn a living for those who depend on me and whom I love so much; but help me to remember that love is more important than money.

O God, You have given me the name of father; you have given me Your own name; help me to be true to it.

This I ask for Your love's sake. Amen.

A Mother's Prayer

O God, help me always to remember that you have given to me the most important task in the world, the task of making a home.

Help me to remember this when I am tired of making beds, and washing clothes, and cooking meals, and cleaning floors, and mending clothes, and standing in shops.

Help me to remember it when I am physically tired in body, and when I am weary in mind with the same things which have to be done again and again, day in and day out.

Help me never to be irritable, never to be impatient, never to be cross. Keep me always sweet. Help me to remember how much my husband and my children need me, and help me not to get annoyed when they take me for granted, and when they never seem to think of the extra work they sometimes cause me.

Help me to make this home such that the family will always be eager to come back to it, and such that, when the children grow up and go out to their own homes, they will have nothing but happy memories of the home from which they have come.

Through Jesus, Mary and Joseph, Amen.

Prayer for the Children

Dear Lord, we thank You for our children -- they are our sunlight, our joy, our fulfillment. It is because we love them so much that we implore Your blessing and protection. They need it so, surround as they are with elements and situations which we ourselves have not faced in our youth. We do not ask You, God, for an insulated world for our children, for in this kind of world, they will not grow nor do we ask You to preserve them from all mistakes, for by some of these are they truly made wiser; but only from such that will destroy them, irreparably perhaps with one sure blow.

Look down upon our petitions as indicative of our willingness to show our share in preserving them from such a fall.

Grant us the wisdom and the tact needed for vigilance over our children. Lord God, You who share Your creativity with us in the beginning forth of our health, help us parents to guide them as God's children from childhood through adolescence to maturity. Amen.

The Average Man's Prayer

Lord, I speak not in a scholarly language,
But somehow I know You won't care;
For mine is a humble petition,
Mine is the average man's prayer.

My thoughts, I'll admit, are not brilliant,
My Wishes--ah, you know them well.
There are many of me and my brethren,
So many, it's needless to tell.

You know I am one of those pluggers;
I go out each day, and I fight!
And sometimes I'm beaten--discouraged,
And God, but I'm weary at night.

I bark at my wife, who is patient,
I bully my kids, who cry,
I know I could be better natured,
But often...I don't even try.

But you know how rough things are running,
How, business is all in a hole.
A man's got to sweat for his living,
And struggle with body and soul.

Lord, help me face life with courage,
And bless everything that I do.
I'm dumb when it comes to this praying,
But I trust, and rely upon You.

Watch over the days of my dear ones,
They're all that I have; on the square,
I wish I could make this more lofty,
But it's only the average man's prayer.

A Student's Prayer

O Glorious St. Anthony, divinely endowed with the learning of Saints, I desire to place in my studies under your protection. Guided by your example, I wish to draw all my knowledge from the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary.

With your assistance, I will study, to do my duty, in a spirit of penance, and with a pure intention.

May the "Father of light" grant me, through your intercession, a bright intellect, a sound judgement and a retentive memory.

Help me to study patiently, orderly and constantly to develop in me the gifts of God and always to make good use of them according to His Divine Will.

O Dear St. Anthony, grant me to succeed in all my studies and examinations, if it be for the greater glory of God and the benefit of my Soul, Amen.
