This was the first and only time (so far) I've seen Rancid live. It was a pretty good show, but a lot of things about it sucked...read on...
WHY IT WAS COOL-
it was a cool show cause it was rancid!!...anyway, AFI and Hepcat played too. AFI kicked ass, but not nearly as much as the last time i saw them. I don't like ska. They did all the songs i wanted them to, except "shes automatic", and i got pretty close to the stage. i was surprised that they played a lot of their old shit (no op ivy...) cause i was expecting more stuff off their new cd (thought they were gonna try and promote it more than they did). most of the people i know who like rancid like their old stuff better anyway... it was cool cause a lot of the people knew all the words and were really into it, which can totally make or break a show. overall they played really well.
WHY IT SUCKED-
it was at the Greek Theater, at UC Berkeley, which is built like a real Greek theater with big cement steps that go really far back and really high. I hate big shows, cause theres always too many people, so thats my main complaint. Also, the area at the bottom, right in front of the stage is just dust. when everyone started moving around, it made a big cloud and ended up completely coating me. i dont really give a fuck about getting dirty. the reason that part sucked was cause i kept breathing it in so it made not be able to breathe very well so i couldn't keep getting into the crowd cause i would get really tired and thats fuckin dangerous. oh yeah, and the stage was really high so they were really far away from the front of the people, which pissed me off cause no punk band should ever be separated from their people...
SO ANYWAY.....
most of the stuff that sucked was cause the place they played at sucked. also, tim was really drunk. i cant decide if that made the show better or worse. i almost got a backstage pass to that show, which would have fuckin' made my decade, but things fell through (dammit). i hope they play around here again soon, so i can see them at a better spot. maybe theyll play someplace smaller...
