Mexico Tattoo Art

(Veala en espanol)

The tattoo industry has come a long way in Mexico. It has gone from an underground scene to an organized industry in just a few short years. The art itself in Mexico is also pretty cool. A lot of really beautiful Pre-Hispanic designs can be found here. Most tattoo artists have a broad selection of Aztec and Mayan designs in their flash among other more typical designs.

Ritual Cesar's tattoo studio in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon (three hours from Texas) is a state of the art tattoo studio. Not only do they provide high quality tattoos, but they also provide a wide variety of body piercing.
Currently working at Ritual Cesar is another artist called Erick(top photo). His specialty is in black and white or sombra. He´s done work for a long time in Mexico City and is well known around the tattoo circuit. They are located in downtown Monterrey, and can be reached at 343-6556. Check them out!

Another cool studio in Mexico City is Tatuajes Mexico located on Insurgentes Avenue 221-3, tel. 514-9663. That's in the same building with Wakantanka Body Piercing (tel. 524-2403 & email dwakantanka@hotmail.com.)

The owners of these two studios- Tony Serrano and Danny Wakantanka put on the 6th Annual ExpoTatuajes Internacional in Mexico City last fall, October 31st thru November 1st. And either of them can give you info for the upcoming expo this fall 1999.

Another tattoo artist I recommend is Rene Vainilla from Playa del Carmen in Mexico. Thats about 45 minutes south of Cancun and the studio is called Sacrificio Maya. This studio is professional and if you think you want a tattoo while your on vacation, its worth it to go there. The phone number is 69390.

Another good tattoo artist in Mexico is Leona Herrod. She works out of Queretaro, Queretaro which is about 3 hours from Mexico City (to the north.) The area is quite nice and brings a lot of tourists and pensioners! Look her up if you want a quality tattoo!

The fellow doing the tattoo in this photo is well known in Mexico City, his name is Piraņa. He used to work at Dermafilia in Coyoacan (another excellent studio) but is now working at TabuTatau in the Colonia Condesa at Mazatlan Ave 120. You can also get indian mehandi (henna) by Eloisa, and body piercing with Gato.

Piraņa is considered the best at Pre-Hispanic tattoos in Mexico City. The phone number at the studio is 211-2371 or call him at home 428-0162. Their email is Tabutatau@excite.com so give em a holler!

Here they are...Sadie´s own tattoos! .
