When it comes to women, Chandler doesn't seem to have much luck especially since he has a fear of commitment ( probably due to his nightmarish family background ) and several serious intimacy issues. He has a bad time asking women out and also breaking up with them.
And more than a little of the blame has to put at his parents' door. With a beautiful, sexy mother like Nora Bing who bears more than a resemblance to Morgan Fairchild, which red-blooded man wouldn't have problems? Chandler obviously expects a domestic motherly lady which Nora definitely isn't. The author of steamy romantic bestsellers ( such as the infamous Mistress Bitch ), Nora gallivants around the world admittedly having intimate relationships with men, has untimely cravings for Kung-Pow chicken and then gets arrested - and later tells it all one nationwide television. It is no surprise that she is regarded as a Freudian nightmare - and a best Ross kisser. Chandler and his mother have aired their differences early on and seem to have settled their problems for the next little while. ( although there is also the added fact that Chandler occasionally superimposes the face of his mother upon the lady he's having sex with... eewww! I don't even want to go there! )
From the beginning, Chandler has problems asking women out and breaking up with them. For a great part of the series, Chandler was in and out of a relationship with the irritating, nasal Janice - played by the wonderful Maggie Wheeler. With huge, curly dark hair that seems a separate part of her body, Janice instantly makes an impression dressed in... indescribable attire with assorted colourful accesories, spiky shoes, her whiny, shrill voice and don't forget that amazingly irritating laugh... Janice has been with him since the beginning. Every public holiday ( New Year, Valentine's ) seemed reason enough for them to get together and they usually broke up the day after. After sometime, Janice finally gave up on her darling Bing-A-Ling and threw her whiny, big haired self into the Mattress King's arms. The couple had a child but unsatisfied, Janice reappeared in Chandler's life and he had a wild affair with the married woman. He appeared to be madly in love with her and even wanted her to move in with him ( even purchasing a dresser drawer for her ). But in a fit of gallantry, Chandler told her to go back to her husband to work out their problems instead. But he managed to get over her ( pretty quickly ) and when Janice returns after her divorce to soak herself with warm Chandler goodness, he stumbles all over himself trying to get away from her grasp. The time apart has made him see all her imperfections - and at least 9 new ones! - again and the poor man even goes to Yemen to avoid her ( since she insists on following him all the way into the plane! ). Recently however, Janice resurfaced with her distinctive laugh when Ross started dating her.
Just as he was newly promoted as a supervisor, Chandler had a beautiful young woman working under him... well, not exactly under him... As he was totally enthralled with the lovely Nina Bookbinder, he found it very hard to fire her when a retrenchment exercise was going on. To cover up, he tells his co-workers that he kept her on due to her mental instability which has the rest of the workers looking at her with concern - and keeping sharp objects far away from her. Chandler learns the hard way about the benefits of telling the truth when later she finds out and he ends up with a stapler on his hand.
This couldn't be called a relationship by any means but what the heck! Aurora was this devastatingly beautiful Israeli princess whose dark beauty stunned Chandler Bing at a hundred paces. Before our main man can speak, she offers him a relationship based on fun, laughter and wild sex. And no strings attached. A man's greatest dream come true! Unfortunately, Aurora's beauty has also stunned her own husband and several other men whom she's seeing. For a while, Chandler consents to this unusual relationship ( time-share basis?? ) as one of her many boyfriends ( kinda like the old, albeit twisted Chinese adage - a teacup with many teapots! Go figure that one out ). Anyway in a puritanical mood, Chandler finally just cannot handle the position that he is in and decides to call their relationship off.
Back in camp, lil 'Skidmark' Chandler dated lil Julie Grath. For two whole summers, they date and did all the things that lil couples did. Until Julie turned out to be not so little anymore. In a year, she put on a hundred and fourty five pounds which left Chandler looking pretty little beside her which obviously made choosy Chandler dump her.
Years ago in grade school, a young Chandler played a naughty prank on a small girl called Susie Moss. Lifting up her skirts in public was a bad, bad thing to do but obviously Chandler the brat had no such compunctions. Cut back to recent years, a beautiful redhead with a raunchy sexual appetite has resurfaced in town. Hormones raging, Chandler is immediately captivated and is even more surprised to know that Susie has turned into a sultry Julia Roberts siren. The duo quickly indulge in a lusty affair that steams up the screen. When Susie suggests that Chandler wear her frilly underwear, he readily agrees. Unfortunately much to his dismay, lil Susie has not forgiven nor forgotten the prank and she does the same thing to big Chandler - leaving him hanging almost naked and dressed only in her panties in a posh restaurant.
It is no wonder that the ladies Chandler meets are pretty weird. For the fabulous Ginger, Chandler manages to pick her up in front of the men's room - just as she is exiting. From the beginning, she seems almost perfect for Chandler. Unbeknownst to Chandler, this funny, lovely lady has an artifical leg. And she once dated Joey! But as he grows to accept it, it seems too late as Ginger is freaked out about his nubbin.
Imagine what Chandler felt when his best friend brought back a girl whom he immediately fell in love with! Brought into the Central Perk as Joey's girlfriend, Kathy the actress soon finds that she certainly has more in common with Chandler. Chandler tries to avoid her as he finds himself lusting after his best friend's girl. Although he tries his best to resist, Chandler gives in and manages to plant a few quick smooches that leaves him filled with guilt. Although Joey already plans to ditch Kathy, he still feels betrayed when Chandler readily admits. Thoroughly dismayed that their indiscretion have led to a fight between Chandler and Joey, Kathy leaves for another city. Joey immediately relents and lets Chandler out of the box ( literally! ). The relationship lasted for some time and it seemed pretty good for the both of them. Unfortunately jealousy reared its ugly head when Kathy costars in a play with a handsome, muscular hunk!
Chandler : I'm saying that she is a devil woman! Y'know I mean you think you know someone and then they turn around and they sleep with Nick! Nick, with his rock hard pecs, and his giant man-nipples! I hate him, I hate her! Well, I don't hate her, I love her. This is all my fault really.
So, as you guessed it, Kathy and Chandler obviously didn't stay together.
Rachel's boss in Bloomingdale's, Joanna is a caricature of a tough, take-charge lady boss who uses most anything to get ahead. Totally ignoring her mousy secretary Sophie, she befriends Rachel, especially after seeing her handsome friend, Chandler. In the beginning, Chandler finds her a dull old dud and tries to break it off though he finds it close to impossible. But after sometime, he literally bumps into her on the street and they end up in bed ( amazing, huh! ). When he tries to break up, they end up making out and she leaves him cuffed him to a chair in her office. Unfortunately, Chandler doesn't appreciate being cuffed half-naked to office furniture. It ends with them breaking up - and Chandler taking 'revenge' by having Joanna similarly cuffed to her chair in a slip. Nothing much could come of this relationship as Joanna got hit by a cab and much too inanimate to go out with anyone. Really, no kidding here. I didn't make this up.
Since the beginning of the show, Chandler Bing and Monica Geller have been the closest of friends. It cannot be just 'joincidence with a C' that he is always just there for her ( while she's also always there for him ) although the theme song says so. And they are usually pictured together, either cuddling comfortably on the Central Perk couch or sharing intimate moments in Monica's apartment. To learn more about their wonderful relationship, go to... Chandler and Monica.
Other ladies who definitely deserve honourable mention are of course...
- Mary Angela Tribbiani, one of Joey's many deep-bosomed, dark-haired sisters whom Chandler shared a drunken smooch at a party
