Character: Casey Mitchum Performer of the Week: November 29 - December 3, 1999 | |
CASEY AT BAT! Everyone was really great this week. Jason George (Michael) and Sherri Saum (Vanessa) were wonderful (loved the Milennium dance!). I about died laughing when Sam Behrens (Tobias/Gregory) started yelling in Gregory's voice and Lesley-Anne Down (Olivia) said "You sounded just like..." Kam Heskin (Caitlin) was heartbreaking and Randy Spelling (Sean, probably at his best ever) and Cristi Ellen Harris (Emily) were beautiful in their goodbye scenes. Hank Cheyne (Ricardo) has been fun, but the character switch-up is annoying me. Susan Ward's (Meg) facial expressions packed a big punch in her scenes with Derek in his office on Monday, and trusty Clive (Robertson, Ben/Derek) has been brilliant as usual. And for those of you who voted for Lesley-Anne Down, your nominations and her dues can be found in this week's Moment of the Week! All incredible performances aside, there was one in particular that really knocked me over, and that one was Timothy Adams as Casey. As a matter of fact, this is his very first Spotlight, so I'd like to congratulate him! :c) I didn't like it when Casey got knocked out by Tess. (Although, the face he made was funny!) They don't need any more victims, after all. But I was glad it happened after all was said and done. And boy, was it ever said and done! We found Casey tied up in some room somewhere (we STILL don't know where) by Derek and Tess. Derek ripped the tape off and began to say not-so-nice things to him, and almost out of nowhere, Casey let loose with a string of hard-hitting insults that didn't even seem like things he would say. But he did, and they were enough to have me laughing for the rest of the day! Over and over, he would lacerate Derek, saying that Derek always wanted to be Ben but never could, and that Ben was everythin Derek wasn't and never could be, and the only thing of Ben's he had was his face. Adams spat the lines out with a harsh tone that he's never gotten the chance to use on the show, and it was immeasurably pleasing to me, someone who has always thought Casey was a little too angelic. In a couple of scenes, he added a whole new dimension to the character, a hint at that dark side we've always hoped for. Praise God, y'all--Casey's human!!! And then, there was the fight. We didn't even know he had been working at the ropes, and in a split second, like He-Man or somebody, we hear a snap and Casey's off and running! He charged into Derek and they tumbled to the floor and fought like lions. Derek did some sort of weird thing with his foot and catapulted Casey across the room, then knocked him out with a bottle. All this in about, oh, maybe eight seconds. If that's wrong, it wasn't much longer. And it was a riot! I laughed from the second Casey just seemed to break the ropes to long after the fight was over and Casey was down for the count. His work for the moment may have been done, but Adams had definitely left an impression. When we have only seen a person in one role and it's a role that we've been watching them in for years, without even realizing what we're doing, we begin to think that the extent of what they can do is whatever we've seen them do in this role. I think that we all maybe got so caught up in (and tired of) Casey being the perfect guy that we thought that he couldn't be anything else. I, being an actor, should have known better, but I'll admit that I did too. (I know: "For shame!") Now I wish that the writers had given Casey more varied opportunities. NOW we find out he can do so much more than just be nice, when the show's drawing to a close, and he only gets to do it for a second. All this time, we've been blaming Timothy and the character of Casey, when the writers could have been making things a little more interesting. I know, don't bash the writers, and I'm not. I love SB's writers, but we all know they are human, and have made their share of big mistakes. (Can YOU say 'Kathleen Noone?') And not that Tim hasn't been really good as Casey. It's just that when a character lapses into repetitiveness, you should add a quirk, throw a curve, show a new side. Sadly for poor Tim, that never happened big-time. But he did get his moment to shine, and he deserved it more than we could ever have guessed. Tim, you're great, and I can't wait to see you acting in something else!
