To Whom it May Concern;
When I first saw the teaser for your "Special Report" on the Goth scene in Houston, I believed it would be handled with a little less bias. I suppose I should have known better, taking the topic into consideration.
I found the programme amusing but slightly offensive in it's naivete, and I feel I must set you straight in a few areas. First of all, if one advertises speaking about the Goth scene in Houston then speak about it. If one is going to delve into the personal beliefs and practices of a few individual people, then advertise it as such. Do not promise one and deliver the other. Do not pretend that the credos of three people (the number allowed to speak for more than ten seconds) adequately represent an entire subculture.
All of the people you spoke to were from Houston. And the club one of your reporters was standing in was in Houston. But as far as presenting the Goth scene in Houston, that was not accomplished. It would be impossible for anyone watching the show to walk away with new knowledge amounting to more than; "Some guy calls himself the Count of Montrose and sells fake fangs. Damian drinks goats' blood during his Satanic rituals. Some club whose name I could not catch has an '80s night frequented by Houston 'Goths.' And, of course, all Goths dress in black, with lots of silver jewelry and vampire make-up, and are secretly yuppies in disguise."
There is infinitely more depth to being a Goth than this. I will not criticize those individuals on the programme for their love of Goth as a style; I did not learn enough from them in the short amount of time to make any judgment at all. But Goth is not just a set of fashion tips. If one is Goth for the attention, then one is not Goth. To truly be Goth you have to have an interest in exploring the facets of existence that society so often buries - questions of death and the supernatural, questions of what and why and how. Goth is a state of mind, a constant curiosity and insatiable inquisitiveness. A search for meaning, individuality, and beauty in a world that forces conformity and closed-mindedness.
The 'Goths' imagined by society are most often vain, sado-masochistic junkies. They worship "the Devil" and are just one Marilyn Manson song away from committing murder-suicide. Unfortunately, the people that fit this mold are the 'Goths' that most often let themselves be seen. They crave the attention, fear, and shock that the public is all too willing to give to them.
True Goths stay out of the spotlight. We do not care what society's opinion of us is because we are more interested in other things. And since society would most likely disapprove of our interests, or at least find them unproductive, then why bother even trying to conform? It is our curiosity we are trying to satiate. No one else need be involved.
You made the mistake of interviewing, from what I could tell, Quantum Goths. These are people only interested in the most superficial level of the subject - how to dress in order to get a double-take from a passer-by and a complement from another Quantum dancing in vampire drag. For their part, there is no mental activity involved in the matter.
After you had resorted to yellow journalism (the sound bite of a woman saying "Well, Marilyn Manson said I should slit my wrists, so I guess I'll do it," without giving the casual viewer time to notice the sarcasm emanating from her), news anchors and reporters sporting their best National Tragedy demeanors, unrelated clips of belly-dancers, and general Goth bashing, you said you would return the next night to show us "the darker side of Goth." You had already shown Satanism, eroticism, and mindless vanity; these things were more closely related to Satanists and Quantum Goths than to Goths. What was legitimately left for your "darker side?" I shudder to think what was presented. Yes, Satanists and Goths tend to dress alike at times, but the similarities usually end there. We should not be homogenized for society's collective ridicule.
This is a letter I wrote in response to a special report done by a local news station on the Gothic scene in my city. It was horrific, as you may be able to tell from the above ramblings. I was really very offended, but wanted to be polite.
Anyway...what else would you like? This is such a twisted subject that it's hard to put down coherent lists...
