Shorts are always the best to start with when watching MST3K. For one they are shorter (fifteen to thirty minutes), and usually have more joke per minute ratio. Mr. B Natural, about a man (played by a woman) that shows a young boy the pleasures of musical instruments, is one of my favorites. Later, I'll put all the shorts with corresponding episode numbers.
The Good...
A list of the top ten MST3K's to start someone with with, IMHO.
1. 309 The Amazing Colossal Man. It's a hard find, considering the rights issues surrounding its departure from store shelves, but it's definitely worth the effort. If someone likes cheesy monster movies using fake science, they'll love this one.
2. 812 The Incredibly Strange Creatures... of course! Scifi shows this one!
3. 706 LazerBlast. This was the last, and probably best, Comedy Central eps. If you like cheesy 70's references, and Roddy McDowal (spelled that way for a reason ^_^) you'll love it. It's a sure hit, really!
4. 612 Starfighters. This movie has no plot. At all. But it has alot of jets refueling, and the jokes, ranging from sexual to junkie, are told. It's really fun!
5. 903 Pumaman. It's great. I still have the theme song stuck in my head.
6. 509 The Girl in Lover's Lane. It's a good movie, but it's better MiSTied.
7. 601 Girls Town. If you like Paul Anka (singing 'Lonely Boy') and Mel Torme, you'll love this. It's not a bad movie, either.
8. 404 Teens from Outerspace. 30-something teens attack a small town, that's just stocked full of rooms to rent and giant lobsters.
9. 321 Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. Classic! Pia Zadora as a little martian, a strange Santa, and a very fake polar bear entertain your yule tide spirit.
10. 8## Jack Frost. It's a fairy tale. A really confusing fairy tale. But a great effort by the MST crew!
The Bad...
1. 202 Sidehackers. It was funny, yeah, but kinda hard to stomach.
2. 402 Giant Gila Monster. Because this movie is "public domain", the crew riffed this one the most. It is pretty good, but overdone. Not the best to start someone with.
3. 418 Attack of the Eye Creatures. This one is just sad...poorly made, poorly produced, and very hard to watch. Borders on 'Manos'.
4. 512 Mitchell. Joe Don Baker in the 70's TV Movie of the Week. Very hard to watch, esp. at the end, when Joel leaves. Wherever you are, we still love you Joel!
5. 513 The Brain that Wouldn't Die. This one is very funny, but this was my mom's first, and was grossed out by it (ripped ear scene). She didn't watch it for a long time afterword...
6. 607 Invasion USA. It's funny, but not a really good one to start off with.
7. 619 Red Zone Cuba. This one is really depressing, and not the best to start a MST party off with. You can rent or buy this one now.
8. 805 She Creature. Not the best in the world, by a long shot.
9. 803 Mole People. Again, kind of slow and not too funny in places.
10. 902 Phantom Planet. It's kind of slow, too.
The Ugly...
1. 424 Manos, the Hands of Fate. By far the worst movie ever created. This movie should never be witnessed by someone who doesn't have a high tolerance for bad movies. You could lose friends over this movie...really (I almost did a few times.) Should really only be seen by someone who you know can handle it. I am not kidding! (Now you really want to see it, don't you. ^_^)
2. 323 Castle of Fu Manchu. This one I haven't made through yet, and I have had the opportunity for three years! Very bad!
3. 823 Invasion of the Neptune Men. You know, if they hadn't referenced Sailor Moon, I would just bury this movie in my backyard. This one comes close to 'Manos' in annoyance factor.
4. 901 The Projected Man. This is a fault of MST3K, completely. They had a recording problem, and didn't fix it in time (yet had enough time to do so.)
5. 606 Creeping Terror. This one creeps and creeps and creeps. One of the few that I had to 'walk off' after watching it.
6. 609 Skydivers. This is the one movie that MST3K claims is their worst movie ever (I doubt them). It is very bad, almost to it being un-MiSTieable.
7. 208 Lost Continent. Rock Climbing, that's all I have to say.
8. 318 Fugitive Alien 2. Tom blows up, it's really that bad.
9. 421 Monster A Go-go. I don't really remember this one, I must be blocking it out of memory...
10. 8?? The Thing that Couldn't Die. I just really can't get over the disembodied head with moving mouth. Sick.
