Elena Dementieva, seeded for the first tie at a Grand Slam, hadn't lost in the first round at Melbourne Park in two prior visits.
The 19-year-old, who burst to prominence in 2000 to reach the US Open semifinals and Olympic final, cruised past American Lilia Osterloh in less than an hour on Tuesday.
The ninth-seeded Dementieva made her Grand Slam debut at the 1999 Australian Open and since then has played every Grand Slam.
