Cats in My Garden
by Dusty the Garden Cat
A Note from the Biogardener
Let me introduce my assistant writer to you. Her name is Dusty, and she knows more about cats than you and I ever will, so she is going to tell us about cats in the garden today.
Dusty wrote this story in October because October 4 is the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi. He is the Italian Saint who loved animals so much that he devoted his life to preaching to them about God's peace and love.
In honor of St. Francis, people in Winnipeg bring their pets to church to get a blessing. Maybe they do that in your town, too. You might ask around to find out.
Here's Dusty
My name is Dusty, and I have lived with many people in my various lives over the centuries, but this is the first time that I live in a house with a beautiful large garden paradise. I take care of that garden by keeping the mice away. I hate mice, because they eat our vegetables, and they try to get in the house when it gets cold outside. I also keep the starlings, grackles, and crows away. I don't like those birds, either, because they eat the baby songbirds in my garden.
Cats' Paradise
All the cats in the neighborhood help me with my job, because my Biogardener is the only lady around here who loves cats, and we love her in return. We never do anything to annoy her. We only annoy people who don't like us. That is the way cats are.
Our Biogardener makes the garden comfortable for us by allowing lots of catnip plants to grow all over the place, especially around the borders. That attracts the other cats and it keeps all of us happy. We call this garden "Cat's Paradise."
Catnip is very soothing. If your mom has a hard time falling asleep some day, tell her to make herself some catnip tea. She won't need to dry it first but can use it fresh. That is what my Biogardener does, and I love the tea. It makes the whole house smells like cat heaven.
My Biogardener always tells me that catnip smells a little bit like skunk, but then she has never been sprayed by one, so she is no authority on the subject.
How about Your Garden?
If you want to grow some catnip, just ask someone for a little plant who already has some. The plant gets bigger every year and if it goes to seed, you can let new plants start all by themselves. If you can't find any plants, you could ask your mom to buy some seeds. A package has enough seeds to start plants for all your friends' gardens. Autumn is a good time to sow the seeds. The plants will come up early next spring.
See You Later
So long for this time. I will be back to teach you some more cat wisdom. I am a real smart cat, you know, because I have lived so many lives. That is why we cats are so much smarter than dogs. They only have one life, and that is so short that they don't learn too much.
