Two Babies in the Christmas Manger
retold for children by Traute Klein
© Traute Klein, biogardenerIn 1994, two missionaries to Russia visited an orphanage and told the children the Christmas story. Most of the children did not know why we celebrate Christmas. They did not know that Jesus was born in a stable in Bethlehem and was laid in a manger and the shepherds heard the news from the angels and that wise men came to bring him presents. After the story, the children were given paper make a picture about the Bible story.
Little Misha’s picture was a little different from the others. He had placed two babies in the manger. The missionaries asked him to explain his picture, and here is what he told them:
When Mary laid her baby in the manger, Jesus looked at me and asked me if I had a place to stay. I told him that I have no mother or father or a place to stay. Then Jesus told me that I could stay with him. I answered him that I could not do that because I had no present to give to him like all the other visitors.
I did want to stay with Jesus so much that I thought that I must have something to give him. I asked Jesus, "Would it be all right if I stayed with you and kept you warm?" And Jesus said, "Yes, that would be fine." So I put myself in the manger with him.
What present are you giving Jesus on his birthday?
