Sailormercury is the senshi of water or ice (not to be confused with Sailorneptune, who is the senshi of the sea). At the beginning of the first season of Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon, she was the second senshi to surface, right after Sailormoon was discovered. In her very first episode, she was being strangled by a youma, and a very prominent Mercury sign appeared on her forehead, which led to Luna's discovery of her (Actually, before Luna discovered that Ami-chan was Sailormercury, she suspected her of being a youma.). For a very short and blissful time during the first season, only Sailormoon and Mercury were the heroines, but that was cut short when Sailormars was discovered, followed by Jupiter, and finally, Venus. These first five senshi were the inner senshi, the guardians of the Princess of the Moon Kingdom (who is none other that Sailormoon). The outer senshi, composed of Uranus, Neptune, Saturn and Pluto, appeared later in Sailor Moon S.
Sailormercury is a very vital part of the inner senshi. She acts as the strategist of the group, analyzing data and planning ways of attack. With the information she derives, the inner senshi know more about their enemy, and are thus more able to defeat it more easily. Also, Sailormercury has power over ice and water, and she uses both in her attacks.
Contrary to popular belief, though, Sailormercury is not the weakest senshi. She is only the weakest in offensive abilities; however, she is the strongest senshi in terms of defense. Most brand her as the weakest right then and there without considering her exceptional endurance abilities, which saved the life of Sailoruranus in a certain Sailorstars episode.
Sailormercury analyzes situations with the help of a mini supercomputer. It looks like a blue rectangular compact with a yellow Mercury sign in front. She also has a visor that appears when she tugs on one of her earrings that helps her zoom in on their opponents' weaknesses. The visor is deactivated in the same manner, with a tug of her earring.
