*Invasion of the Youja-kai*
a YuYu Hakusho-Samurai Troopers story...

"YUSUKE!!"
"AHH!!!" The scream made the whole class blink before they froze. One of the only two students who weren't (and the one who had screamed) unclenched his hands from his desk that he'd griped in surprise. Yusuke Urameshi smoothed back his black hair (ungelled, for once), and glared at the dimunitive authority of the spirit realm with angry brown eyes. "So what do you want now? I finally go to school so you wouldn't lecture me, and you bother me here too? "
"I didn't have a choice! This sprang up out of nowhere!" Koenma shouted back before he regained his usual composure. He looked at Yusuke and the other person who wasn't frozen in time, Kazuma Kuwabara, once Yusuke's rival, now his partner as a reikei tankei(spiritual detective). He shook his head and looked up at Koenma floating in the air above Yusuke. "You know I hate that..." He looked at his test, the pencil mark that he'd made across the page when his hand skidded. "And why didn't you send that cute lady with the oar?"
Koenma held up a hand and a picture appeared. "I couldn't, this is much too important." The picture focused, and the 2 dectectives gasped in shock. "A realm opened up - one I have no control of," he replied, and looked at the picture himself. "This appeared over the city of Shinjuku two hours ago." It was a traditional Japanese castle, but what was so suprising was that it was floating in the clouds over the modern skyscrapers of the city.
"How...?" Yusuke began to ask, when a brilliant blast of power flashed from the castle, and a large black shape loomed over a building. They stared as it split up into five color spheres which streamed across the sky in different directions. Koenma was the first to snap out of his stunned gaze. "We have to go NOW!" He grabbed both of their hands and, as time resumed and the class collectively gasped, they disappeared.

Once in Koenma's office, they watched the screen as armored soldiers raided the city, driving the frightened citizens into portals. The blue oni(ogre) that helped Koenma as a secretary read thru his book. "My research on this realm confirms my guess that this is a powerful part of the spiritual world called the 'Youja-Kai'." George scanned the page quickly. "It is headed by a demon called 'Arago', and has many spirit-soldiers led by his strong MaSho(demon-generals). Arago was defeated a thousand years ago by," Yusuke and Kuwabara looked away from the screen, while Koenma continued to watch, "a mystical shamen named Kaosu, who was said to be chosen by the gods, but actually was a reikai tankei as well..."
"Right, but he is not formally one anymore, since when his clan was destroyed, he asked to leave me, and I had no choice but to let him go." Koenma stared at his hands. "The only thing I could assure him of was that not all of his clan was dead, but I couldn't help search for this survivor, since the Youja-Kai is closed to me like I said before." He leveled a sharp glance at his two detectives. "His task was to guard a very powerful item. A set of armor worn by Arago himself left when he was driven back. Kaosu came to the conclusion that not only would it be a magnet for all sorts of demons seeking to claim it, but it would also be a possible key for Arago to return to try to invade. So I gave him power and, he used that plus part of his own humanity to splinter the armor into different forms of armor capable of being worn by special humans, like you. Those spheres we saw were five of those armors." He looked at the screen again."I have no clue as to who Kaosu chose to defeat Arago this time. I am charging you two to find out who they are, but NOT to get involved unless you absolutely have to or see these demons winning. One thing, however, I can not send Hiei or Kurama with you because since they are demons themselves, they would be compelled to join with Arago regardless of their natures."
Yusuke and Kuwabara looked at the screen once more, then at Koenma. Yusuke nodded.
*********
They caught site of the massive grey-green clouds hanging over the city as Botan flew them in near a volcano. No sign of the castle was visible, but they could feel the powerful output of the demonic apparition. Koenma had felt a different source of power here, so he decided it had to be one of the people chosen by Kaosu. As Botan flew away(she ran the same risk as Hiei and Kurama if they came too close to the evil power), Yusuke glanced around, and spotted a flash of white near the base of the volcano. He looked closer and saw a tiger with something in his mouth, a sword? Yusuke grabbed Kuwabara and ran after it.
"Hey! What is going on?" Kuwabara protested, yanking his arm away from Yusuke's grasp, but didn't stop running.
"I saw a white tiger with a sword in its mouth running up the side of the volcano, maybe it's a clue to find that wearer. Remember, keep your power shielded - we can't be 'noticed'".
"Worry about yourself, Urameshi. I can do this!" Kuwabara yelled. Yusuke smiled but said nothing.

**********
The red armor rising out of the volcano was the first thing they saw from their hastily-acquired vantage point. Enormous blue eyes framed by a white face shield were the only features they could make out. He was facing an armored figure, one of the demon-generals that Koenma had advised them of. 'He dosn't look so tough...', Yusuke thought to himself as the wearer sparred easily against the demon. 'Maybe not...,' he gasped as the demon leapt into the air, and with a big blast of power, lashed chains towards the wearer. But he just flung them back at the armored demon, making Yusuke cheer involuntarily.
A movement caught Kuwabara's eye, and he turned to see an older (but very pretty) girl and a small kid watching and yelling various things to the person in the red armor. "Urameshi, the wearer's name is Ryo..." He pointed them out to Yusuke. Evidently the demon noticed them at that time too, and caught them in the chains of his weapon when they tried to run away. Kuwabara almost rushed forward, but Yusuke held him back. "We have to see him in action. Believe me, I want to kick that guy's butt too." His eyes held a eager but determined gleam to them. "But do you want to explain to Koenma why we screwed things up and let that demon win?" He glared at the demon, then gasped in shock as the demon threw his captives into the steaming crater. He was about to disobey Koenma and take the demon out, his hand already starting to glow, when the wearer dove into the volcano, shouting their names. Yusuke thought that the wearer sounded young, and a moment later his thought was confirmed, as a teenager his age leapt out of the volcano, his ornate armor replaced by a basic red and white armor. He had black shoulder-length hair and was as short as Yusuke. He gasped for breath and collapsed to the ground, carrying the two people he'd just saved, when the chain whirled out of the steam to wrap itself around his neck and drag him back to the demon, who slammed him against a cliffside, knocking the boy out. The demon carried him to the edge, where he tossed the unconscious teen into the volcano. Yusuke figured this was it, he could try to save the wearer now, when the teen pulled on the chain and tugged the demon in with him.
"Urameshi, we have to go..." Kuwabara's words made Yusuke jump, he'd forgotten for the moment that he wasn't alone. He glanced at his partner and saw the almost-vacant look when he was sensing danger. The ground underneath rumbled and Yusuke knew enough of science to start running again. They'd just made it to the base when the mountain exploded.
A short while later, a sudden flicker of light appeared next to them as they watched the wearer, no, Ryo, Yusuke reminded himself (the person was his age, after all), shielding his companions from the volcano's fury. The two detectives jumped, even Kuwabara had never sensed him with his ESP til he appeared. The man had long white hair and was wearing blue and white clothes and a few pouches here and there, with a conic hat hiding much of his face.
He didn't seem to notice them at first, just kept watching Ryo and his friends as they left in a small jeep heading towards the city. "Good, he has just realized that he must find the others to win the battle..." he said to himself resolutely. Then he seemed to notice Yusuke and Kuwabara for the first time. "Koenma sent you to check things out, I see. Give him my regards, and that I think I may have found my many-times granddaughter. The Samurai Troopers must save her, as they must the world."
"Kaosu?!" Yusuke made the connection. "You are a detective as well?" His brown eyes widened. Kaosu looked at him directly, his eyes visible for the first time, they were a light blue that gleamed out of the shadow made by his hat. "I was, once," he replied. "When I gave up my mortality to save this world, Koenma brought me back as a spirit to guide the Troopers."
Koenma appeared then, in his teen form, and bowed to Kaosu, who bowed back. "Always the curious watcher, Koenma-sama?" Kaosu smiled, then his face grew serious. "I know that you all are curious as to what will happen, but I do not know the answer myself. The only ones who can answer that are the ones who have the power to defeat Arago now." He held up a staff with rings on it, which projected a picture of five teens, including Ryo, the one they had just seen. He was joined by a blonde-haired boy with green armor, a heavy-set boy with blue-grey hair and orange armor, an innocent-looking brown-haired boy with light-blue armor, and the last was a boy with his blue hair held from his face by a headband, wearing dark blue armor. His appearance caught Yusuke's gaze for a minute, since he seemed a bit familiar. Then the picture disappeared. They looked at Kaosu, who had already vanished.
Koenma sighed and made them both reappear back in their classroom with the message "...until this crisis is resolved, you both are on alert." As Yusuke looked at his test and sighed, he could not shake the sights he had just seen, nor that boy that had caught his attention. He promised himself to try to get to Shinjuku by himself to see what was happening, and to find out what he could do. Until then, he had a stupid test he had not prepared for, as usual...
