Well forget it, pal! I ain't gonna rack my brain tryin' to come up with some kinda word play to decribe the music I listen to just so "the kiddies" can grasp the concept one moment and then measure it as passe a few days later! TO HELL WIT' ALL OF 'EM!! I ain't livin' my life for them!
Anyway...
I hope your sound card is working, because the sites that you link to from here are loaded with sound samples.
Believe it or not, I am studying music in hope of one day forming a band here in Tucson. Wish me luck, because this will not be easy.
I listen to a lot of different stuff; not all of it falls into the mainstream. If I had to narrow it down, I'd say my biggest influences are:
The Residents
This band started in San Francisco (allegedly), and was inspired by "free jazz" and psychedelic "freak" music. And after the release of "Santa Dog" in 1972, they've been "garding avants" ever since...
Negativland
These guys are not so much a band as they are "media watchdogs". Considering the events of the past decade (the OJ trial, false news stories, etc.), their presence seems like more of a necessity these days...
Public Enemy
Sure, you could say that these guys are rap artists, but it's so much deeper than just that! Terminator X is such a fucking master with the turntable! He's created a rich soundscape of noise that has not been duplicated ANYWHERE!! A must listen!
Laurie Anderson
David Bowie
Kate Bush
Eurythmics
Ministry
Pretenders
Prince (or The Artist, or TAFKAP, or 0(+>, or whatever)
REM
Steely Dan (A TRUE guilty pleasure - Walter Becker can be quite "catty" in his writings)
Aphex Twin - I Care Because You Do
B-52's - Cosmic Thing
Big Star - Third/Sister Lovers
Cabaret Voltaire - 2x45
Captain Beefheart - Doc At The Radar Station
Brian Eno - Before And After Science
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Pixies - Surfer Rosa
Liz Phair - Exile In Guyville
They Might Be Giants - Lincoln
