Off the Face of the Earth Aljean Harmetz
Discuss This Book

--I don't read a lot of modern books, so iit took a little while to get used to reading this book. It had refrences to Nintendo and 90's movies such as the Ninja Turtles. I wasn't used to reading books new enough to know about such things.

David Greene is an 8 year old boy filled with anger. His parents have been divorced for some time, and his anger seems to stem from that fact. He's run away from home several times already, so it's not much of a surprise when his mother, Drew, finds him missing. She assumes that he's gone to his friend's house and decides to make him wait for a while.

Meanwhile, David has run away, but he hasn't gone to his friend's house. He went to the mall (and is quite proud of the fact that he's crossed a busy main road, which he's not allowed to cross when his parents are around) He buys a few baseball cards then goes to phone his father. The answering machine picks up, and David gives up.

That's when he meets Denver. David is cautious of this friendly stranger, but not cautious enough. What follows is Drew's realization that David is no where to be found, Denver's abusive personality, and David's 8 year old intelligence trying to lead his mother to his rescue.

It was a fun book, and certainly a change of literary scenery for me, but not one of my favorites. It's good entertainment, but not very thought provoking.
