One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Ken Kesey
Discuss This Book--This story is seen through the eyes of "CChief", a Native American mental patient who hasn't uttered a word in years. The other patients, and the staff assume that he is deaf and mute.
As the story begins, a new patient arrives on the ward. McMurphy is unlike the rest of the patients, who first arrived scared and nervous. McMurphy is a loud, obnoxious rebel from the moment he arrives. Rumor has it that he isn't in need of mental therapy, but that he worked his way into the hospital as a way of getting out of jail.
McMurphy gambles and cheats his way into the pocket books of most of the patients on the ward, but mostly he is interested in taking power away from the Big Nurse, and getting the other patients to loosen up and laugh again. Things begin to change after McMurphy takes the ward on a fishing trip. Eventually his games turn into a war between him and the Big Nurse. McMurphy may be defiant and daring, but the Big Nurse holds a very powerful weapon in her posession.
I found this book to be incredibly funny. I read most of it while I was at work, and got quite a few odd looks as I sat there laughing at my book.
