Firestarter Stephen King
Discuss This Book--Two college students needed 200 dollars, and so participated in a seemingly harmless scientific experiment. There they met, and there they fell in love. Little did they know that the experiemtn was far from "harmless." It produced in both of them psychic abilities. The woman acquired the ability to move objects with her mind (aparently subconsciously) and the man gained the ability to "push" people with his mind - making them believe or do whatever he said to them. Though these powers could be rather dangerous, the couple was kindhearted. Then they had a daughter.
She was no ordinary daughter. She had the ability to start fires - pyrokenisis. Fire extinguishers appeared in the house, and the couple taught her as best they could that it was wrong and dangerous to start fires.
Then one night the daughter (Charlie) stays at a friend's house instead of coming straight home. The government (who has been keeping close watch) takes this as a sign that the family is about to run, and murders Charlie's mother in an attempt to learn where Charlie is. Charlie's father senses this, and bolts to save his daughter.
The two of them are on the run for months before the government finally creates a plan to stop them. Once they're brought in, both of them are tested. The dangerous plan involves one of the most dangerous agents on the side of the government who agrees to cooperate on one condition - that he is allowed to kill Charlie when the experiments are finished.
Charlie, who eventually befriends this dangerous agent, is soon lighing fires with the hope that she will one day see her father again. Unknown to Charlie, her father creates a plan of his own, hoping to escape and get their story to the newspaper. His hope is that when the population knows their story they will be able to live a free lifestyle. The story (typical of a S. King novel) ends with a bang.
It was a fun story, and moved along quickly.
