rabit redux John Updike

--Published in 1971, this novel serves as aa look back at the 60's. It describes another period of Rabbit's life as his marriage is again on the rocks. This time, Janice leaves Harry, to live with her lover, Charlie Stavros. Janice works with Charlie at her father's car lot.

Harry seems fairly indifferent about the fact that his wife has left him and their son Nelson. Rabbit lives somewhat aimlessly, and ends up meeting Jill and Skeeter. Jill is a young run-away, and Skeeter is a shady african-american. Somehow they both end up living with Rabbit and Nelson.

Skeeter gives Rabbit lessons about life, while Jill forms an intimate relationship with Rabbit's son, Nelson. Unfortunately Rabbit's neighbors disapprove of Rabbit's new lifestlye. What happens in this novel has a permanent effect on Rabbit's relationship with his son.

I did not enjoy this novel as I enjoyed rabbit, run. It presents a view of the 60's through the eyes of someone who has just experienced the decade, however I was bored with the endless teaching sessions given by Skeeter. Perhaps I wouldn't have made a good hippie after all.
