BACKGROUND
In the fall of 1998, I announced to several Rootsweb lists that I |
had uncovered a wealth of information while researching my |
gggrandfather Rev. John DuBois, a cotton-gin maker and Alabama |
Methodist minister.
It turns out that he wrote a series of over 20 articles that were |
published in the 1880s about life in Charleston and Alabama from about |
1800 until the Civil War era. I was invited by 4 list-owners to publish |
his works on the internet, which I did as a series of 5 e-mails per day |
for a total of 57.
The response was unbelievable.
In the first 48 hours of my posting, I had received close to 500 emails |
related to these articles. Over the past few months, the total email |
load generated directly or indirectly by these postings exceeds 3,000 |
(this includes the various mailing lists I subscribed to.) And people |
kept asking where they could buy the book.
The book is now a reality.

PUBLICATION AND ORDERING (as of 12/12/98)
NECESSARY FRIED CHICKEN (Incidents and Characters) is in its latter pre-publication (hardbound copy) stages.
Being a bit dismayed over the probable costs to the public for a |
hardbound version of the book, I sought a way for those who wanted it |
for less to obtain it.
I still hold the copyright and am offering it for sale on the internet |
over the next few weeks in spiral-bound (or better binding, depending on |
how I can hold prices down) for $20 plus postage.
Once published as a hardbound edition, I expect it will run almost |
double that given what costs are these days. And I don't know if I will be able to hold onto the copyright in order to get it published by an established (as opposed to a "vanity") publisher.
The book is now 163 pages including footnotes, appendices, |
and index. Over the next couple of weeks will be added illustrations, photos, and a genealogical section. The genealogical section will hopefully eventually include many who are mentioned in the book, but for now it primarily involves the DuBois family and is not intended as much more than biographical information on the author. These parts should be finished over the next two weeks, but the cost will be higher for that version.
If you would like the advance copy that is ready now, you may order it by sending an e-mail. VISA and MC accepted. Or, you may send a check to the address below.
If you would like to wait for the illustrated and genealogical version, or for the published hardbound copy, I can put you on a notification list for when those are ready.
Again, thank you for your interest.
