Candy Cane Cookies
1 cup shortening (1/2 butter or margarine)
1 cup sifted confectioner's sugar
1 egg
1-1/2 tsp almond extract
1 tsp vanilla
2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt (if self rising flour omit salt)
1/2 tsp red food coloring
Heat oven to 375
Mix shortening, sugar, egg and flavoring thorougly.
Mix flour & salt, stir into shortening mixture
Divide dough in half, blend in food coloring.
Roll a 4" strip (using 1 tsp dough) from each color roll on floured board
Place side by side; press lightly together and twist like rope
Place on ungreased baking sheet.
Curve top to form handle
Bake about 9 minutes until lightly browned
While warm, sprinkle with 1/2 cup peppermint candy & 1/2 cup granulated sugar
