Meg: Ben, I have never felt this way about anyone else..and that's why when I came all the way back from Kansas, just to give us another chance.
Ben: You know, when you came back from Kansas I swore to myself I was going to be patient.
Meg: And you have been incredibly patient.
Ben: It hasn't been easy, but I, uh, I wanted to, uh, ...wait until I knew that you wanted to be with me as much as I wanted to be with you and well, these past few days...they've been, they've been amazing.
Meg: Yes, they have.
Ben: Now I'm convinced more than ever that we can have a wonderful future together. You know, I can --- I can really feel it Meg. Stronger than I have ever known anything.
Meg: What are you saying?
Ben: Well, uh, they day you came back from Kansas, I, uh, bought something and I've been saving it, hoping the right moment would come along and I uh, and well, I think it has.
[Walks across room, picks up ring box and opens it. Meg gets teary eyed and stares as Ben smiles at her from across the room.]
[end scene][cut in, Meg continues to look flabbergasted]
Ben: [holding box] Meg, I have spent half my life running away and now for the first time, I want to run to something -- to someone.
Meg: Ben.....
Ben: I've tried to show you every way I know how to tell you how much you mean to me, but there's no better way then by asking you to spend the rest of your life with me. [walks across room and bends on one knee, holding ring toward Meg] Meg Cummings, will you marry me?
[scene breaks to commercial with Meg looking down towards the ring, Ben or both.]
Episode ends.
Ben's last lines are repeated.
Meg: How can you even ask me that?
Ben: Meg, I know I have no right to ask you to marry me. Not after I promised to take things slowly between us.
Meg: Ben ---
Ben: No, no - who am I kidding. I'm not even sure if I should be asking you at all.
Meg: No, no --
Ben: Before you turn me down let me just have my say, please. Just five minutes. To make a further fool of myself.
Meg: You could have ten min --
Ben: You know I'm probably not the easiest person to live with, and uh, even under the best of circumstances and I already put you through hell, but - -.
Meg: Occasionally.
Ben: Do you believe in signs?
Meg: Signs? What?
Ben: Signs. Here, come with me. [grabs Meg's right hand and walks out to the terrace with her] Look up there, what do you see?
Meg: I see the sky and the moon and the stars.
Ben: You know, I really hadn't noticed them in years until you came along.
Meg: Ben --
Ben: And then the night I met you on the Internet and I came out here and I happened to glance up and there was a shooting star streaking right across the horizon. A sign, I thought. A good sign.
Meg: Did you make a wish?
Ben: No, not until the second time I saw a shooting star. The night you came back from Kansas.
Meg: You saw one then, too?
Ben: So as much as I say to myself you'd be better off with out me, the, uh, heaven seems to be telling a different story. Hey, you're shivering. Let's go back inside. [Ben turns, ready to go inside]
Meg: Be? What was it wished for?
Ben: Oh, I had a few wishes actually. But I held one of them in my arms tonight.
[end scene]
Ben: Sorry to monopolize the conversation. I was just trying to make you understand -- [looks at Meg - she's smiling] what?
Meg: Nothing, I was just remembering one of our first chats on the Internet where I did most of the talking.
Ben: About Thanksgiving, Ludlow style, if I remember.
Meg: You know, I'm surprised you ever came back for more.
Ben: Well, I couldn't stay away. There was something about Dorothy from Kansas.
Meg: Something else besides my corny stories?
Ben: Look, I fell in love with you, Meg. That was the last thing I expected and the last thing I wanted, but you got through when no one else could. Believe me, I wasn't happy about it.
Meg: Is that why you pushed me away? Why you didn't want me to come to Sunset Beach?
Ben: Well, you scared the hell out of me.
Meg: But I don't any more?
Ben: The only thing that scares me now is being without you. Because I love you, Meg, with all my heart.
[end scene]
Meg: So, is it over?
Ben: Is what over?
Meg: Your speech, your big -- to get me to marry you.
Ben: Oh, just one more thing. One more pledge really.
Meg: You'll always put the cap back on the toothpaste?
Ben: Oh, that, yeah. And no secrets. I'll never keep anything from you again Meg.
Meg: You don't know how long I've wondered if I'd ever get to know you, I mean, really, really know you.
Ben: You will be the only one who will. All you have to do is ask and I'll tell you everything -- my hopes, my fears, my past.
Meg: You'd do that?
Ben: Yea, for you. Is there anything you want to know?
Meg: Just one thing. [smiles] How did I ever get to be so blessed? [hugs him]
[end scene]
[cut in]
Ben: What are you saying?
Meg: That I'm the luckiest woman in the world to have you in my life. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
Ben: Now, does that mean what I think it means? You'll marry me?
Meg: Well, if you would of let me finish the first time you mentioned it, you might have your answer by now.
Ben: But when you said how could I even ask you, I thought --
Meg: How could you ask me for something that you already have? Ben, you have had me for such a long time. I can't even remember a time that I didn't love you.
Ben: Meg, I --
Meg: I have loved you my entire life, even before I knew you. You've always been right here, in my heart.
Ben: And?
Meg: And yes. Yes, I will marry you, Ben. Yes.
Ben: Mmm. Mmm.
[picks her up, kissing Meg while swinging her around and they both laugh]
[end scene]
[kissing]
Meg: We're getting married. We're getting married.
Ben: Let me make it official. [takes out ring, gets down on his knee and puts the ring on her finger]
Meg: This is incredible.
Ben: The ring?
Meg: Knowing that...I'm about to be Mrs. Ben Evans. You don't know how long I have dreamed of calling myself that.
Ben: And you have no idea how often I have imagined proposing to you. I wanted it to be as special as you are.
Meg: Well, it was.
Ben: What do you mean? You surprised me by coming back tonight. All this is spur of the moment.
Meg: Well, if this was spur of the moment, then I can't wait to see the wedding.
Ben: Well, hopefully, the wedding will be a bit more organized.
Meg: Well, maybe we should practice.
Ben: I'd much rather practice for the honeymoon. [smiles]
[They kiss. Ben picks Meg up into his arms. Meg giggles as he walks up the stairs. They go into his bedroom and he places her onto the bed. They kiss.]
Music while kissing:
Let me make you see
Let me show you
How I know you
And you're for me
Cause now's the place
And now's the time
Baby, real love
Is so hard to find
Have you got The rest of your life?
Every single morning
Noon and night
That's how long, baby
It will take me
The rest of your life
Just to let you know It feels so right
Girl, it's going to take me
The rest of your life
Girl, there so much to say....
