THE TRAVOLTA EFFECT

By Janet Cawley

His movie debut came in a very small role in the 1975 horror flick "The Devil's Rain", filmed in Mexico. And it was on that set that he made an acquaintance who changed his life.

"I met a girl in Mexico who was studying [the applied religious philosophy] Scientology," he remembers. "I said I'd tried so many different things, does it really work? And she said, when you come to Los Angeles, take a course and see for yourself. So I said [it's a] deal. And I took a course, and it was just the biggest change I'd ever experienced. Whatever she thought she was telling me, it was so much more than I ever imagined. I was just enamored, and I've been doing it for 23 years. I've met a lot of wonderful people and find it extremely valuable."

Now, with his star not just ascending but shining strongly in the Hollywood firmament, Travolta still sees no reason to let up and has a new movie in the works.

It's "Battlefield Earth", based on the book by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. "This is not a Scientology movie," Travolta stresses. "It's a fantasy, science fiction, storybook-type thing." Travolta, who's producing, will also play a villain, and the film is tentatively slated for release in spring or summer of next year.
