Meanwhile Roger Christian, the second unit director on the Star Wars project has just committed himself to directing his own big budget sci-fi thriller. The film stars John Travolta and is based on the book Battlefield Earth, by Ron L Hubbard, founder and guru of the controversial Church of Scientology, of which Travolta is a devoted member.
Rumour has it that Travolta has been cast as the leader of a ten foot alien contingent sent to defeat the human race.
The question of whether this is just another derivative of Independence Day, or a sinister plot to flush away the last vestiges of logical thought, to be replaced with Hubbard dogma, is still to be proven in the movie theatres.
The film's given budget is thought to exceed £70 million, a sure sign that it is going to be about as character-driven as Hubbard's writing is readable. Maybe if Christian trumps his mentor and starts the tale at episode five, he may stand a chance of seeing his trailers steal the show in 20 years time.
