The Telegraph
September 24, 1999JOHN TRAVOLTA,the American film star and a member of the Church of Scientology, has cut short a visit to France, where seven Scientology officials have been put on trial for embezzling from converts.
Travolta, who was in France to promote his film The General's Daughter, left by private jet, cancelling several interviews. A spokesman for Travolta in Paris said the actor had cut short his visit to fly to Los Angeles to begin a new film.
The French Europe 1 radio, however, quoted show-business sources as saying he had feared being asked questions about his own links to Scientology, which is treated as a legitimate religion in the United States but as a cult in France. The trial in Marseilles wound up yesterday and a verdict is due on Nov 15. Julian Nundy, Paris
