Title: Blood Kin
Author: Ronald Kelly
Publisher: Pinnacle Books
Format: Paperback
Copyright Date: 1996

Over 100 years ago a determined woman drove a stake through her husband's heart, desperate to destroy the monster he'd become. She succeeded...but only for a time. Now Josiah Craven has risen again, and he intends to repay his family's betrayal by bringing all his descendants under his wing. Since his living years, the Cravens have srpead out from their mountain, but a handful yet dwells within driving distance of the old estate. And so the killing begins, and so must the struggle for survival begin again. For one it is a chance to put the nightmares of the past behind him. For another it is a chance to escape the tyranny of her husband and discover strength she didn't know she had. And for one it is the only chance to save the family he loves more than life itself. Will they succeed, or is Green Hollow, Tennessee doomed to dark and bloody nights?

Blood Kin could be just another vampire novel, but it isn't. It's true, the vampires are basically what you might expect: sleep by day, hunt by night, shapechanging blood-thirsty monsters unable to enter homes withoug being invited. But it's the story of the human characters that makes the reading worthwhile.

I particularyl found Tammy Craven to be an interesting character. She happens to enjoy reading horror novels, then winds up living one herself. What makes her plight all the more fascinating is that it is the novels that drive her persecutor to...well, persecute her, but is also those novels that enable her to survive her persecutor's...er, persecution when he comes to stalk her. How's that for irony, huh? But what's really ironic is that she, who could never find the strength to stand up to her husband while he lived, can muster up the courage to flee for her life after he dies.

With so many vampire novels on the shelves, Blood Kin might easily be lost in the crowd. But believe you me: that's doing the author and the book a great injustice. With strong characters and compelling motivations, this book is worth giving it a chance. So go ahead, give it a chance!

Rating: Thumbs up! Familial love can be taken too far, as the Cravens prove so well!
