Title: Fatalis
Author: Jeff Rovin
Publisher: St. Martin's Paperbacks
Format: Paperback
Copyright Date: 2000

Changing weather patterns have far reaching effects, but who would ever dream that those effects would reach back over eleven thousand years? No one, of course. But for the people of Santa Barbara, and for Professor Jim Grand and reporter Hannah Hughes, it's more than a dream: it's a reality. And though there are those that might doubt the possibility that death from eleven millenia in the past could still be active, it's the only possible explanation for the numerous deaths and disappearances plaguing the coastal California community. The only problem now is figuring out what to do about it. Because if a combination of extreme heat and extreme cold--two of nature's deadliest weapons--couldn't stop this threat from the past, do even humankind's weaponry have a hope of stopping the death?

Fatalis, if you're any science buff, should clue you in on the nature of the killer...or killers. To be honest, though, it was the title and the author that caught my attention first. After all, Jeff Rovin brought us Vespers, and that was to me a great book. Therefore, anything of a similar vein that the author offers is sure to be just as impressive and intense as his earlier work, right? Right!

The hard scientific evidence that the author incorporates into his book makes the plot that much more believable, and--of particular interest to me as a teacher--the way he presents it prevents it from sounding bookish or dull. We as readers enter into the characters' thoughts as we review with the characters what they do and don't know, and we go with them on the quest for more knowledge. Now, imagine if you had to find out all the same things without this book, meaning that you'd have to go digging through research paper after research paper. Would you want to? I doubt it. But by presenting the information this way, you get to learn something you wouldn't ordinarily learn on your own. Thank you, authors everywhere, for being so devoted to turning out quality works rich with details to your rejoicing fans!

Okay, maybe that was over the top, but Fatalis is not a book to be taken lightly. Instead, open yourself to the possibilities that everything Jeff Rovin presents could possibly be true. Who knows? The very death-delivering horrors from the past might be waking up even now! Are you ready to face them? No? Better read the book and find out how!

Rating: Thumbs up! Get ready for blood and gore and fangs galore, and we're not talking vampires here!
