That said, on to the review!
Tristan Carruthers and Ivy Lyons were the happiest teen couple in town...until Tristan died in an automobile accident. Now, Ivy is left picking up the pieces of her shattered life. It doesn't help that her mother was recently remarried and that her new stepbrother can be frustratingly aloof and superior one moment and considerate and caring the next, nor that she's being constantly bombarded with memories and the well-meant but ill-timed efforts of her best friends. And she's lost her faith in angels, in whom she's believed for a long time, ever since she nearly drowned thanks to one of her mother's former boyfriends. Which is too bad, because there happens to be someone lurking around her who needs her to believe again if he is ever to save her life. Because while his death might have been an accident, there's every possibility it was an accident only because he wasn't the intended target!
Kissed by an Angel may not entirely match the vein of the usual horror novel--no monsters or evil spirits trying to kill everyone or take over the world--but the way I figure it, the involvement of angels in a story filled with suspense and an unknown killer is definitely closer to horror than fantasy or sci-fi.
Don't ask me why I read this book, because there's no way I could explain. There was just something about it that drew me to it. Maybe it was the word "angel" in the title, since I'm always up for the supernatural. Or maybe it was the romantic yet suspenseful synopsis on the back of the book. It doesn't really matter. The plot is interesting, the characters in the book are all impressively real, and the interactions between the living and the not are terrific. Incidentally, maybe I should mention that this is just the first novel of three?
Kissed by an Angel may not be what you're used to, but give it a chance. I did, and I enjoyed it so much that I bought the other two books in the trilogy. While some may not appreciate the suggestion of western religion inherent in the title, I say look beyond that to the story and the beauty of it all. After all, if you're reading this review, you're open-minded enough to give the book a chance, right?
