Title: Necroscope III: The Source
Author: Brian Lumley
Publisher: Tor
Format: Paperback
Copyright Date: 1989

Harry Keogh, the world's only known Necroscope, died fighting a necromancer-turned-Wamphyri...but lived on as a ghost in his son's body. He struggled and succeeded against a new breed of vampire...but his infant son took himself and his mother elsewhere. He told his story to Alec Kyle, the head of British E-Branch...and took up residence in his body when the Opposition destroyed Alec's mind. Now new information comes to light that raises a horrible suspicion: is the Opposition creating vampires somehow? Something is happening in a remote area of the Soviet Union, and only Harry's special metaphysical abilities can investigate. But is he over his head?

Harry knows the theories of black holes and white holes, but he has never seen one. If someone had told him about a grey hole, he probably wouldn't have believed in it, but that's what seems to exist in the Perchorsk Pass: a grey hole through which vampires have come! Harry does his homework and determines that this must be how the original vampires entered the world. But where did they come from? There is a world of vampires on the other side of the grey hole, and it is in the world's best interest that someone take steps to close the door. However, the glowing sphere holds a secret hope for Harry: did his son and wife use the portal and are they on the other side?

The Necroscope locates the original grey hole--the Perchorsk one is the second--and plunges through, stepping out onto the source world of the vampires. There he befriends the Travellers, for whom strangers from the "hell-lands" beyond the Gate are not so rare anymore: two preceded Harry, and they are ready to help him destroy the vampires. Their one hope for survival is The-Dweller-in-his-Garden-in-the-West, who has several secrets of his own. Little does Harry know, however, that there is a true Wamphyri rising to ascendancy in the world he left behind and one who, if his evil goes unchecked, could destroy everything Harry fought for in another body!

I enjoy reading about vampires, and I enjoy reading about psychic phenomena. This book (and its nine related siblings) combines both my interests into a potent, compelling novel that I couldn't put down. You don't need to read the first books (reviews are in the Archive) to understand what's happening in this book, but I suggest you start at the very beginning of the series. It's not only easier to understand that way, you won't miss a single exciting minute! Warning: contains some graphic/sexual content.

Rating: Thumbs up! Want vampires? How about a world filled with them?
