Title: They Thirst
Author: Robert R. McCammon
Publisher: Pocket Books
Format: Paperback
Copyright Date: 1981

Andre Palatazin fled his village in Hungary when something his father went out hunting for returned and struck with a vengeance. Now a police detective in Los Angeles, he fears that the same force that decimated his village is preparing to do the same in the City of Angels, only on a much larger scale. Strange vandalisms of cemeteries, where corpses are disinterred and their coffins stolen. Odd disappearances throughout the city. And what's more, his enemies are no longer entirely inhuman: there are those whose sympathies lie so closely with their goals that they have gone over to them of their own free will! But Andy isn't entirely alone either: there are others in the city who have sensed and discovered the truth. The only question is, will they be enough to stop what's coming: Hell in the City of Angels?

They Thirst, as you've probably guessed by now, is another vampire novel. Oh, but don't think it's just your ordinary run-of-the-mill novel. It has everything you could wish for: vampires, heroic hunters, natural disasters (yeah, like vampires weren't a disaster in and of themselves) and total cataclysm. You even get to see the destruction and drowning of Los Angeles itself, if you can believe that. Me, I'd have probably found the drowning of North Carolina more believable than a city like L.A., but hey, writer's choice, right?

Perhaps the most interesting part of this entire novel is the way that the vampires are so implacable and methodical in their conquest of the city. I mean, obviously it would take a lot of planning, right? And there's no way any scourge of vampires could take over just like that! No, it takes a lot of manipulation of forces beyond mortal comprehension to give every advantage to the vampires, including the subversion and conversion of the "lower" elements of humanity in the city. If I were a vampire hunter, I certainly wouldn't want to face any of these vampires--their leaders, anyway--without a great deal of mystical aid on my side. And after reading this book, I don't think you'd want to either!

It's a fairly long book, but They Thirst is an enjoyable read, and any vampire fan is sure to love this book. There may be some questionable material throughout--the author doesn't throw it in your face, but he doesn't pull his punches either--so reader discretion is definitely advised. Still, if you think you can handle it, by all means, go for it! Maybe this novel will satisfy your hunger...or your thirst!

Rating: Thumbs up! It's a war between the undead legions of Hell in the City of Angels!
