This was a commission for the commander of a military transport vessel. He was retiring from the service and wanted a commemorative picture of his ship, the Ardennes. The setting is a beach on the Dorset coast where they held military exercises. A feature of this spot is that chalk cliff erosion has produced an underwater shelf making the water above appear bright turquoise, where the shelf ends the water reverts to deep ultramarine.
