This was painted for a gallery in Bahrain from an incomplete black and white photocopy of an aquatint produced in 1811. My assignment was to turn this image in to a 2ftx3ft oil painting as detailed as possible, down to altering the shape of the boats to match the diagrams provided. It was painstaking, work though much of the background had to be guessed at or made up. Interestingly, on at least two occasions, people that have worked out there have recognised the location, be it somewhat updated since 1811. Before being sold, this work was exhibited at Southampton City Art Gallery in 1995. Since then, another version of this scene measuring 6ft 6"x5ft has been produced.
