This Syrian crusader fort now stands as a ruin on a long ridge between two deep gorges in the Nusairi Mountains, about 15 miles Northeast of the port of Lattaquia. What appealed to me about Sahyun were the colors. Around 975 the Byzantines built the first walls using the bright orange stone, the foundations of which were hewn straight out of the rock face.
Then, in the early 12th Century, the Franks came and built on top of the existing fort using the blue grey stone giving a spectacular two-tone effect.
This painting was sold from the Mountbatten Gallery Romsey 1997 to a buyer in France.
